AOC: "On this point of tax on tips, as one of the only people in this body who has lived off of tips, I want to tell you a little bit about the scam ... the cap on that is $25,000 while you're jacking up taxes on people who make less than $50,000 across the US ... while kicking them off the ACA."

Today, on this Earth Day 2025, we've released our Q1 2025 Natural Catastrophe and Climate report.

Economic Loss: ~$110 billion
Insured Loss: ~$56 billion

These totals were both substantially higher than their Q1 decadal averages and dominated by US events.

On this day in 1906: the M 7.9 San Francisco Earthquake. I get chills every time I see this ShakeMap.

Publicly funded science is how we learn about quakes in CA and beyond, and how we prepare for future ones. Current federal attacks on science are an abandonment of communities facing these hazards:

How sediment dynamics vary between upstream and downstream locations
Understanding channel-floodplain connectivity during flood events

This work is crucial for water quality and ecosystem health 🌊

If you're an NSF PI like me, you might be wondering: Will my grant be suspended or terminated next week?

A few key things to know: First off, remember that NSF is **congressionally mandated** to evaluate broader impacts. And laws like CHIPS and Science supersede EOs.

But also... 🧵 thread
Found this gem in an arcane NSF doc...key to know:

The Constitution and law SUPERSEDES exec orders!

"In the event of a conflict between policies issued at a lower tier versus policies issued at a higher tier, the higher tier policy will take precedence"

New federal directives have instructed agencies to cancel any external presentations for several weeks. As a result, the EPSP event with David Callery and Cara Sponaugle of the USFS BAER team for Wednesday January 29th, has been canceled.

We are sad. We hope to reschedule this event in the future.
