Britain once led the world in road safety.

Road collisions cost the country about £40bn ($50bn, or 1.5% of GDP) each year.

In 2011, the government dropped its road safety targets altogether. The new government promises a strategy, but will it be enough?

Is road rage getting worse? This short piece by GCN looks at why all types of road users get angry and the impact groups like #KidicalMass are having changing that. @saskiaheijltjes.bsky.social captures why these rides matter brilliantly.

What’s your experience?

Everyone benefits from enabling safe cycling for teenagers.
With 60% of trips by bike, teens are the age group that cycle the most in the Netherlands—over 2,000 km. per capita per year.

Rather than spend these years depending on parents and waiting for a driver’s license, they experience the autonomy promised by the car without its stress, danger, and cost.

Does your school do #bikeability? If not ask them to do it. It’s funded so there’s literally no excuse not to help keep our kids safe.

Research on the impact it has here:

Safe streets include inclusive design that women are willing to cycle in the dark. It shouldn’t be a choose between multi lane traffic and dark, isolated ride.

Are you organising a #glowride or #beatthedark ride? Share below and let’s get as many people out as possible.

We want to encourage everyone to sign this petition to introduce a graduated drivers licence to help reduce deaths and serious injuries in young drivers.

Almost 5,000 people are killed or seriously injured by a driver aged 25 and under every year.

Hard to believe it’s a over a year since our @for-birmingham.bsky.social, @safestreetsnow.bsky.social action in Erdington.
A year on, concerted campaigning has led Birmingham City Council to acknowledge we have a road safety emergency but the issues persist and the pace of change painfully slow.

The AA estimated that introducing a graduated driving licence (GDL) would save at least 58 lives and prevent 934 people being seriously injured in road crashes each year.

And this is, of course, the result of decades (centuries!) of building transport infrastructure by and for men -
Work commutes represent just 16% of journeys, yet our entire transport system is designed around them.

The real potential for cycling lies in the other 84%—shorter trips within our neighborhoods to local shops, cafes, restaurants, doctor’s, friend’s, transit, sports, and school.

In the debate over whether shopping strips should be directly accessible by cars, importantly, vehicular access can still occur, but priority is given to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. Cars are given access as a guest, or subject to everyone else’s safety. #activetravel #copenhagen

The lack of any charges yet is disturbing. I know the system is to blame, that there never should have been four lanes of cars speeding right next to a sidewalk of pedestrians, cyclists and babies in strollers.

But there needs to be some kind of accountability for drivers who KILL people.
