Holle awoke to the savory aromas of garlic and onion wafting through the manor. That certainly solved the mystery of why he’d been dreaming about food - something he never did. He slowly uncurled himself from the sofa and pushed to his feet, where he then took a moment to ensure he stayed on his feet. He’d learned the hard way that moving quickly, or even at an average pace, was little more than a shortcut to the floor at this point in time. Feeling as though he was made of sludge, but drawn by a familiar smell that belonged not in Ishgard, but in his childhood memories, he shuffled his way into the kitchen. There he found Haurchefant, humming to himself as he stirred a pot on the stove. “Hey,” Holle said, intentionally alerting the elezen to his presence; he knew full well that he tended to sneak up on people without actually meaning to do so, and he didn’t want to startle his friend while he was in front of a hot stove. “Oh! You’re awake!” Haurchefant’s bright smile, his genuine happiness to see him (when he’d just seen him yesterday, and the day before that, and so on), made Holle feel warm. Special. “How are you feeling?” Holle shrugged. “Alright, I guess. About the same.” Like shit, basically, but with the resignation that that was just his life, at the moment. Constantly exhausted, short of breath, the aches and pains of a body that had been pushed far beyond its limits and now felt barely held together at all. Nothing that was going to change in a day, or that was worth complaining about. Instead, he shuffled closer, sniffing at the air and leaning to peer into the large pot - and exclaimed in surprise. “Is that bantan? Where did you learn to make that?” Haurchefant laughed. “One of the recipes your mother gave me. I hope I’ve done it justice.” The contents of the pot could not have been more unassuming, a very beige broth simmering away with bits of ground meat and tiny clumps of flour. Exactly how it was supposed to look. “It smells good.” “Garlic always does. I just hope it tastes good. This whole crumbling flour into the soup business is new to me.” He continued to stir, frowning thoughtfully at his work. “She did show me how, but…” “She did?” He couldn’t say he was surprised - his mother was practically smitten with the knight. “Mm. She insisted that this was the most important recipe she was giving me, and I needed to get it right.” He chuckled. “I’ll admit, I’ve been half afraid I’d turn around and she’d be behind me with a spoon, waiting for me to profane the family recipe.” Holle laughed. “She’d never. She likes you too much. Besides, she’s made bantan with all kinds of stuff: peiste, marmot, adamantoise. Sandworm, once. That was terrible.” He made a face at the memory of that very…unique texture. “It’s supposed to be mutton, but we didn’t get that very much.” “Well, as you may have noticed, Coerthas has an abundance of karakul. And, fortunately, very few sandworms. Possibly due to the lack of sand. Now go have a seat, hmm? This should be done soon.” In other words, Haurchefant thought he’d been on his feet for long enough. Not inclined to argue - knowing that he would inevitably lose - he went obediently to the dining room to wait. Several minutes later, Haurchefant appeared with two bowls of bantan and set them down, one for each of them. The soup now had a bit more color, thanks to a generous sprinkling of green onion. Rather than sit down, however, the elezen went back to the kitchen, returning a moment later with a little dish he set beside Holle’s bowl. Chili flakes! Holle’s tail thwapped gently against the leg of the chair, and he shoveled a small spoonful onto his bantan. He stirred it all together as Haurchefant sat opposite him, and eagerly dug in - it didn’t for a moment occur to him that it wouldn’t be anything other than delicious in spite of it being Haurchefant’s first attempt, and his trust was well-placed. It was perfect, rich and gamey and wonderful, and the happy twitching of his tail continued. He didn’t even realize that Haurchefant was watching him until he laughed. “I’m not going to be hit with a spoon anytime soon, I take it?” Holle shook his head. “No, this is really good. Even better than I remember.” “Well, maybe don’t tell your mother that.”
