Episode 50 Murderbot and Character is up now! I started wondering whether inherent contradiction within a character was an engine that drives them. Maybe? Some of them, sometimes? It's worth thinking about.

Episode 49 is up! It's about Louise Fitzhugh's brilliant 1964 novel Harriet the Spy, a perfect book that has absolutely shaped my life.

New episode of Sacred Cheese of Life! 48 Cold Comfort Farm. The book, not the movie, though the movie is an incredibly faithful adaptation. One of my favorites of all time. Have a listen!

I noticed that the latest episode didn't show up on the old feed on Apple Podcasts. Turns out you need to search for the show again and follow the new iteration. The latest episode will be 47 A Rose for Emily. Thank you!

Episode 47 is live! William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily." Read it first or regret that missed opportunity forever!

I'm migrating the podcast to a new hosting service. I'm hoping no bumps in the road, but we'll work through them if any arrive.

If they aren’t showing ID and they’re not in uniform - how do we know they’re with ICE or any government thing? They have shirts that say ICE. If I’m wearing a sweatshirt that says Harvard - doesn’t mean went to Harvard - I might have gone to the Target by Harvard.

New episode is up! 46 We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Amazing book, difficult to grapple with, but endlessly fun.

Episode 43 about Jupiter Ascending is up but at what cost? I recorded live while watching. Also I used "truncate silence" so it sounds like a massive ADHD attack. Very fun movie!

Next episode is about Farscape, watching the pilot to prep for the space opera side of the show within the Becca book. It's a whole saga!

Episode 41 Landscape is now up! I'm not allowed to have events on Sundays anymore. In this episode I dig into the ways landscape can (and should) be integral to storytelling. Sacred cheese of life!

Episode 40 of Sacred Cheese of Life is up! It's about the Battlestar Galactica miniseries and how it does the incredible things it does. And about how loving something to distraction is always a good thing in the end.

It's all for Becca, though. She's getting this whole thing. And they're shooting the show at the studio at Thrushcross. Okay!

There's a new post up on Story on the Brain that gets into the background for the Battlestar Galactica rewatch psychological drama I'm having right now and wish I wasn't.

This week's episode, number 40, will be about the Battlestar Galactica miniseries. So say we all.

New episode is up! Episode 39 I Am the Cheese. It's a harrowing read and a psychological mystery. I hope you get a chance to read it before you listen to this. I learned so much from it!

Episode 38 Scamanda is up! Lots of discussion of the nature of fiction and lying and what makes it such a terrible thing to do to people. Also why dream sequences can be so annoying and how to avoid it. Sacred cheese of life!

Episode 36 is up! Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth. Heck of a title. Great middle grade novel that sparked a lot of thoughts about how books end and why we want one thing or another to happen.

Trumpists will continue to be furious at any dissent no matter how much power they steal. That’s because the administration is premised on pathological insecurity. They’re shitty people, they know it, and they will never stop resenting being seen as shitty people.

Nice:

The four boxes of liberty is a 19th-century American idea that proposes: "There are four boxes to be used in the defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and cartridge. Please use in that order."

This is horseshit. If you fear protests will lead to martial law then you already live under martial law — and you’re the one who declared it.

Plus, it *won’t* lead to a declaration of martial law and the fear misconstrues the nature of the threats we face.
