Amazingly, our Vancouver visit has coincided with the construction of Canada’s very first Dutch-inspired fietsstraat (“bicycle street”).

Burnaby’s Frances-Union Bikeway is currently getting an all ages and abilities upgrade that treats cyclists as the main users of the corridor, and cars as guests.

After 15 months of work, Utrecht’s Amsterdamsestraatweg has been completely renewed.
Greener, safer, and ready for the future — while still carrying its long history from Imperial Route to liveable street.
Reinventing Utrecht’s Amsterdamsestraatweg: From Imperial Route to Liveable Street
On the last day of August the reconstruction of Utrecht’s Amsterdamsestraatweg was completed. With the final layer of red asphalt applied to the cycle tracks, the municipality closed a project that had lasted fifteen months. Everything along the street has been renewed: well over 30,000 m2 from façade to façade, nothing was left untouched. Only on a few of the larger squares could some mature trees be preserved.

But in recent years, those policymakers have done a stunning reversal, reallocating significant amounts of that space in the name of liveability.🧵

A section of this bike path was very poorly illuminated, so 1st of Oct I sent feedback to the city, asking them to fix this. Not just a dead lamp, but there wasn't even any poles. To my surprise, they installed a completely new one pole and lamp quite quickly 🤌
