New video! Old news, new package: AI, Procedural Generation, UGC, in-game trading, Blockchain, and the Metaverse

Why are game developers so adverse to these technologies? The best way to find out is by asking folks who have lived through the history of game development.

Recent discussion about the perils of doors in gamedev reminded me of a bug caused by a door in a game you may have heard of called "Half Life 2".

I wrote it up over on Mastodon (I find it's better at long threads):

Crazy to think we still have the 'Are games art?' discussion when we already had this clear evidence from 12 years ago:

This is why whenever an engineer says the word "framework" the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and I know we have to immediately cut back on scope.
said this as a joke but honestly,,

Essentially: I have often heard from people outside of game development that our field sounds scary, as they heard many horror stories.

At the same time, I hear very similar horror stories from people outside of games, in places such as acting, research, and banking

We are not unique in our issues

At a conference recently I asked someone in the legal space why it isn’t possible for big games to allow their licensed music to be permissive in YouTube videos and streams of their game.

As in: If the music is in context of the game, why couldn’t that be detected by digital fingerprinting?

Designers are always inventing new titles. Web designer, UI designer, UX designer, UX/UI designer, Product designer, UX/AI designer (???)

These are all the same!

As long as your work is mediated entirely by Figma and Jira, you are just a production artist. Here's how to get out of that racket.
Without UX governance, your app turns to "sludge"
Break out of the feature delivery mindset and attend to the architecture and maintenance of the product.

People sometimes think I go to conferences purely for fun.

No, there is also serious business to be had. With serious handshakes. Like this culmination of an important business meeting with @alecshea.com

People don't just leave the game industry. Especially if they slam the door on the way out, it can seem like many folks are going.

But many folks also quietly enter through the back door. Folks like accountants, actors, researchers, or engineers from banking and fintech that start working in games.

Both 'creëert' and 'reëel' are real Dutch words, and as someone from The Netherlands I'd like to take this time to apologize. I don't know how this happened either.

I just sat on the most comfortable stool I have ever sat on in my life. I need to have one!

The owner did not have a name ready for it, and I can’t find anything in reverse image searches. Does anyone know what stool this is, and where I can buy one?

Reality is unrealistic
Again, to every videogame writer who wrote funny emails to read in an immersive sim/etc. where I rolled my eyes and said out loud, "lol like anyone would ever email something this on the nose", again, sorry, I was wrong, life sucks, you nailed it

I always love to see studios showing off their internal tools!
A section of dialogue choices between the player (blue) and Outer Worlds 2 character Ethel Tinsley (red). The full tree of choices for the conversation is shown on the right. The dialogue is written in OEI Tools, a tool made by and for Obsidian Entertainment
