20G is too small. 12G might be too large for a first time.
Might I suggest a compromise of 18 or 16 G?

A chart showing comparative thicknesses of piercings for barbell shaft thickness and some of the common locations and types associated with the particular initial sizing of piercing. The chart starts from 20G (0.81mm) size which is often used for nose piercings, and heads toward thicker piercings all the way up to 00G thickness (10mm).
