All of these articles should be seen as a kind of misinformation, a symptom of elite insularity, fragility and class anxiety. Every time they warned us about the 'new McCarthyism,' they missed an opportunity to point out how the same old McCarthyism was growing and radicalizing under our noses.

These efforts were discussed endlessly in the nation's most prestigious publications. They were compared to McCarthyism, Stalinism, the Salem witch trials. College activists were framed as an existential threat against which the population required constant vigilance.

At least 80% of that panic was about lectures being canceled. Articles withheld from publication. Teachers investigated — but not disciplined — for classroom speech. "Self-censorship" among conservative professors.
