Really a sad loss.
On this darkest solstice day of the year, my heart has dimmed, waking up to learn of the loss of dear colleague and mentor, Yannick Mellier. Yannick will be known to most as the lead of the amazing Euclid Space Telescope which will revolutionise our understanding of the Dark Universe 🧵🔭

I think we will see more harebrained plans like these in the future. Starlink is not really suisteinable, Mars is a remote desert (strong understatement), so what do you do with so many reusable rockets? Send things to space. Useful, or not. As long as VCs or US gov pay.
“.. Skeptics believe the technical risks are being underestimated and say space-based data centers won’t be competitive on cost, especially if power and other constraints ease on the ground.”

Thoughts from Aravind Ravichandran as NASA (again) flirts with moving Earth observation to commercial data buys:

“Here is an underappreciated irony: commercial EO companies already depend on NASA's public infrastructure.”

Why "Science-as-a-Service" Doesn't Work for Earth Science
There has been a lot of talk lately about whether commercial Earth observation (EO) companies could replace parts of NASA’s Earth science mission portfolio. With a new Administrator coming in, that de...

I think the US democrats are taking the wrong strategy re:shutdown. Own it. Yes, it's our shutdown, it's a democratic shutdown and we're proud of it because the alternative is [much worse]. It's in the hands of the republicans, who own x, y and z to do the right thing etc.

Calm down. It's too early for a rapture. These never happen before 5 pm at Benny's, old fashion + tequila shot for 5.99.

Trump is no longer the scandal. It is the acquiescence of the american society.

Solargram, from December 2024 to August 2025. In Leiden, Netherlands. Pity of the wall that cuts the sun path on the right (west), but it ended quite ok!

CBS canceled Colbert’s show just THREE DAYS after Colbert called out CBS parent company Paramount for its $16M settlement with Trump – a deal that looks like bribery.

America deserves to know if his show was canceled for political reasons.

Watch and share his message.

Current AI craze reminds a bit of XVIII c. automata. Awe inspiring and expensive for sure, but not really autonomous, or useful. Ok, more useful than that, but nowhere near the self-motivated, critical, unstoppable AGI that's being peddled by the snake-oil salesmen left and right.

Showing the way on how to deal with these demands.
1/ The US government has ordered the Swedish city of Stockholm to end its diversity, inclusivity and equality (DEI) programmes within 10 days. The city authorities say the demand is "bizarre" and they won't be complying. ⬇️

I think the hardest part to grasp about trumpism is that consistency and reality attachment are optional at any time. Tariffs may be removed at any time and if he says they are still in place, they are, and Gyna is paying them. Anything goes. So the cake can be eaten, kept, sold, and hired.

Donald Trump spent $23M on golf (up to mid march).

Over 56 days, he spent $410k of our tax dollars each day at his own clubs.

That is one 3-year NSF grant per day.

Waste and abuse, my ass.
