This is interesting. NPR left Twitter six months ago and saw only a single percentage point difference in traffic despite having over 8 million followers. (Algorithmic changes meant people weren’t seeing/engaging with their tweets anyway) niemanreports.org/npr-twitter-...

I know plenty about oligarchy, as one does living under "the Russian world" rule and trying to escape corruption, lawlessness and decay it brings. American oligarchy isn't much different.

I just found out today that there was not yet a starter pack for Analytical Sociology. With so many new people on the platform, I decided to create one so that you can follow analytical sociologists with one click!

If you want to be added/removed, please send a DM/comment

A first starter pack on computational social science, that is, researchers who use computational methods (broadly defined) to answer social science questions. It's a vaguely defined field with blurry borders, so it's certainly incomplete; if you want to be on it, let me know! go.bsky.app/PCckf3C

Ok here are some amazing Social Computing researchers (mostly post-phd for scope). They work on making platforms, like this one, better.

If California covered all its canals and aqueducts with solar, it could generate 13 GW of solar power and save 63 billion gallons of water, enough water for 2 million people & 50,000 irrigated acres. 🔌💡💧

The U.S. right built an alternative legal network to effectively challenge the rule of law over many decades, they have now completed that project in the information sphere too. Any analysis of this week’s outcome that does not start with this understanding feels wholly inadequate.
The Right built a powerful, partisan, & participatory media environment to support its messaging, which offers a compelling "deep story" for its participants. The Left relied upon rigid, self-preserving institutional media and its "story" is little more than a defense of imperfect institutions.

We need to do more systems thinking. It's so interesting and relevant to just about everything. I don't understand how people think everyone needs to learn how to code but we don't even get taught the most basic principles of (Complex) Systems Theory.

Disinformation is arguably the biggest problem society faces now, accelerated by technology and exacerbated by ignorance. Bullshit artists like Trump and Hasan stoke narratives for their own gain, undermining meaningful discourse in the process. Thus the information landscape is polluted with

This is one of the primary goals of "AI" these days: to create an empty chair that takes the blame for corporate misconduct.

We didn't discriminate, the AI told us who to hire. We didn't wrongfully reject the health insurance claim, the AI told us to. And on and on.
Love this story: Air Canada's chatbot gives false advice on booking a bereavement ticket, guy gets screwed, then Air Canada then argues its chatbot is a SEPARATE LEGAL ENTITY FROM THEM THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ITS OWN ACTIONS. lol wut

anyway they lost the case hardcore
