Hard to know exactly how it worked. One basic theory is that Epstein required kompromat if someone wanted access to his victims, particularly the younger ones who had higher associated risk. Explains the letter neatly. God, it's so sick to even think about.

Not just mutual knowledge. The Trump-Epstein "birthday letter", assuming it's real and attributable to Trump, makes a lot more sense if you think of it as the intentional creation of blackmail material.

This is how I view the bizarre "birthday letter" from Trump to Epstein. Trump was intentionally giving Epstein something that posed no danger to him as long as Epstein was safe and overlooked but that would be incredibly damning for him if Epstein was ever caught and scrutinized.
