If you're organizing a scientific meeting outside the U.S. and a U.S.-immigrant scientist pulls out because they do not want to risk going back through immigration, do the right thing and refund their registration.

If you really can't do it for everyone, at least refund trainees.

so far I'm seeing a lot of universities respond to grant terminations with

"oh I guess now we don't have that grant anymore"

instead of

"your assertion of a grant termination is executive overreach, see you in court"

So, universities: respectfully, what the fuck?

What follows will include some generalizations based on population averages of what I have experienced over the course of my career. There are, of course, exceptions in every group who are substantially more to one extreme or the other.

Let me ask again: where are presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton. Where are the Fortune 500 CEOs? The university presidents. Is all this “leadership” stuff they tout just words?

I don’t want to think so but the question must be asked.

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.”

University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

DEI doesn’t mean hiring unqualified people—it means tearing down rigged systems that kept qualified talent out. Giving everyone a fair shot, breaking down barriers that have historically excluded talent. Diversity brings fresh perspectives, drives innovation, and reflects the world being served.
