But this is to misunderstand the purpose of fan fiction. Fan fiction starts with the itch of dissatisfaction, it is the art of emotional correction. When what is canon fails to deliver, the fan fiction writers step in, armed with Word documents and righteous indignation. You think this character deserved more hand-holding? Fine. Someone out there is writing 10,000 words of forehead kisses and mutual healing right now. Because fan fiction isn't just rewriting, it's repairing. It's giving yourself the closure you need when the author won't. It's deciding that pain can end differently, that love can be louder, that characters who were doomed in print get to live this time. It's literature written by people who refused to move on and sometimes these people spell really badly (and that is completely OK). And yes, it's rebellion. Against gatekeeping, against prestige, against the assumption that stories only count when they make money. Fan fiction exists because readers loved something so much they refused to let it die.

A comic about the events of patch 7.2. Raudus is running with a serious-looking Wuk Lamat, Sphene and Gulool Ja. Suddenly a bolt of lightning hits Raudus, as others stop in shock. Raudus is about to fall but prevents that with determination that springs from anger or whatever. "I had forgotten how it feels to be on the receiving end of Thunder", he thinks while his ears are all fuzzed from the hit and Sphene is trying to resist touching them. A screen lits up and on it appears Calyx, looking down and saying "Tch. So you can survive this much?" Sphene points and exlaims "Calyx!" while Wuk Lamat looks at her and wonders if she really just heard her say "Calyrex", the Pokemon. Raudus shouts "Hah! It'll take a little more than some Fire, Thunder and Ice to kill a Black Mage!", to which Calyx questions "And that leaves...?" "Physical violence!", says Raudus, "And..."

Raudus points to the side, saying: "Whatever those bastards do!!" Wuk Lamat and Sphene let out a shocked "BA--!!?" in unison at the sudden swear. Gulool Ja is unfazed, and had been that way ever since he first heard his father shout your favourite Latin American swear. And what Raudus was pointing, was a White Mage nursing plants with her restorative magic and water spells. Said White Mage gets flowers to pop, birds and butterflies fly around. Beautiful. Raudus looks at her in vitriol, tail all puffed in anger. Calyx is nudging the corner of the screen he's in, saying "What is it? I can't see from this angle." Gulool Ja thinks to himself: "White magic? I wonder if there are any inherited hostilities rooted all the way to the War of the Magi that Shale taught me about on the history of Eorzea---". In a corner is the evil Sphene going "um".
