I literally posted about this earlier in the week! Congrats on taking a big step and crossing that boundary that marks the true ex-pat…

This is entirely for @shikataganai.bsky.social - no, markets don’t follow normal distributions. But, still…

After battling a flu with a cough so persistent it deserved its own postal code, I ventured back to cycling today. Ten one-minute efforts at 120% FTP felt almost pleasant by comparison. Meanwhile, Mrs. Wiki soldiers on in viral misery. Recovery feels promising -unless, of course, it isn't.

Easy 60’ 🚴🏾‍♂️ – ❤️ ceiling

- 60’ easy ride ❤️ < 114 bpm

Felt rested, easy effort, yet ❤️ decided it was time for a jazz solo. Usually, easy to hang at 113; today it 🚀 past 120. No fatigue, no stress - just vibes. Possibly the toffee apple I shared (scientifically untested, but compelling).

Easy 50’ aerobic spin today ❤️< 120. My training group was grinding at 6AM NZT, which lined up w/ my 9AM PST. joined their Zwift meetup and stuck to my lazy 🚴‍♂️ cruise. Thank god, because their workout looked brutal. I’ll take my suffering on my Wednesday as planned. No need to rush the pain.

In reviewing our family’s strategic priorities for the year, I’m considering moving ‘inferential reasoning’ up the list - perhaps just ahead of ‘supporting Keeya’s SAT journey’ but still behind ‘perfectly fluffy rice.’ No final decisions yet; we’ll assess need as the year unfolds.

It’s hard keeping up with the acronyms.

An FTP test doesn’t need a deep dive—we all know it’s awful. But here’s the reality check: I haven’t done real TSS-building training since July, and this was my first baseline test in a long time. We all have to start somewhere.

And today, somewhere is me on the bike too wrecked to unclip.

Tempo 🚴🏾

10’ w/u ez
5 x (2’ 80% FTP / 2’ 90% FTP / 1’ 50% FTP)
10’ c/d ez

Our ride group cycles (literally) through 8 sessions, then an FTP test I’d rather skip. But tonight felt good—the kind of effort that makes sense in hindsight. Unlike four weeks ago, when it felt like survival training.

Base (re)Building / HR 🏃🏾‍♂️

Zone 2: where running feels like walking and walking feels like progress.

🔹 5’ w/u 103-113 bpm
🔹 30’ 113 - 123 bpm
🔹 5’ c/d 103-113 bpm

Kept it slow (so slow). Had to walk a fair bit to stay under 123 bpm, but endurance is built, not bought. Just getting it done.

VO2 4 x 4 to the head

10’ w/u
4 x 4’ at 105% FTP / 3’ recovery
7’ c/d
Steady 85-90 rpm throughout

HR climbed well, and the last interval didn’t break me—progress? Hopefully. Bonus: Snow day meant I rode with the NZ crew. Suffering loves company. 🚴‍♂️🔥

Ez Run - Stacking Tiny Bricks
• 5’ @ 103-113 bpm
• 20’ @ 113-123 bpm
• 5’ @ 103-113 bpm
Early, cold garage miles. HR took effort to stay in zone—which feels absurd at this intensity, but here we are. 🫀 Stacking bricks. Very small ones.
Next week: 3x run (40’) / tempo / vo2 🚴‍♂️ / 2 x ez 🚴‍♂️

Base (re)build: 30’ HR ceiling 🏃🏾‍♂️

Stacking another brick in the slow return to fitness, running, and treadmill tolerance. 🚗 Drove home from PDX today, so after hours of sitting, movement was mandatory.

5’ 103-113 bpm
20’ 113-123 bpm
5’ 103-113 bpm

📈 Next week: BIG MOVES - adding 10’
February 1, 2025 at 11:19 AM
Tempo Ride - 80/90 🚴🏾‍♂️

• 10’ w/u easy
• 5x (2’ @ 80% FTP / 2’ @ 90% FTP / 1’ zone 1)
• 10’ c/d easy

FTP set correctly = no cardiac panic. HR peaked nicely, effort felt right, and for once, tempo felt like tempo. Now off for a four-hour 🚗 to PDX for work. Hope I don’t cramp 🤷🏾

Base Build HR ceiling 🏃‍♂️

5' w/u 103-113 bpm
20' 113-123 bpm
5' c/d 103-113 bpm

HR was a elevated throughout. It meant the session was more walk (mostly walk) than janky jog. Sometimes the body just does what it wants. Next week we add duration and aerobic bike. Building back...

VO2 Max Intervals 🚴🏾‍♂️

10’ w/up
5x: 3’ @ 105% FTP / 2’ rec
10’ c/d

Forgot to adjust (down) my Zwift FTP—rookie error. Still tough - RPE’s improving. Only two hard sessions this week, so I’m pushing without overcooking. Morning workout = big win. Day is always better when I front-load movement.

Volleyball!

Ms. 10’s 3rd/4th grade 10U team is up against 5th/6th grade 12U teams. Brutal but character building. Highlight so far? Watching a girl nail a jump serve while our team works on clearing the net. It’s 28°F outside, so here’s to indoor sports and small victories!

Building Back 🏃🏾‍♂️HR Ceiling

5’ w/u 103-113 bpm
20’ 113-123 bpm
5’ c/d 103-113 bpm.

Stuck to HR limits (with some walking). Drifted 1 bpm twice—distracted by glaciers, as always. Slow and steady = green zone magic. Base camp now, summit later. Well, a summit. But above where I am.

As a learning exercise, Mrs. Wiki wrote a guide to surviving 15 years owning an inn. She brought the wisdom; I wrestled with InDesign and became a layout savant. Now we’ve cracked the process, I might finally publish Things I Learned the Hard Way: A Girl Dad’s Guide to Murphy’s Law. Stay tuned

FTP-ish 🚴🏾

Today’s session was progress, with a few moments where my heart and legs threatened mutiny.

W/U: 10’
Intervals: 5x
2:30 @ 80% FTP / 1:30 @ 90% FTP / 1’ @ 115w
C/D: 10’
Cadence: 85–90 rpm

Endurance is building, but HR hits the top end too soon. Two heavy sessions a week feels right.
January 25, 2025 at 1:18 AM
📙 Side project: We’re publishing a guide for aspiring innkeepers, based on our 15 years running one. Mrs. Wiki wrote it (firm ideas) and I’m handling production (firm spreadsheets). She says we didn’t worry about modest margins. For the record: I worried. Marriage = divide and conquer.

SCY Build 🏊🏾‍♂️

First proper session back. Modified body position to work around psoas limitations. Managed the full set once warm, albeit with some technical compromises. Sometimes you just have to work with what you've got

WU: 200 ez / 200 drill
MS: 5 x 150 build / 50 ez
WD: 200 ez

Back after the Great Psoas Rebellion of '24. Today's recipe for humility:

10' w/u
7 x (2' FTP / 2' 70w)
7' c/d

Dialed back to 90%, but my heart rate still moonshot past November's levels. The road to rebuilding starts here - dignity optional, determination required.

As the old adage goes, a family who makes sushi together as a pre birthday treat… has a lot of leftover rice.
January 10, 2025 at 5:07 AM
Spending New Year's Day vision boarding with family – scissors out like kindergarteners with mortgages. My board is basically a Herman Miller catalog, less "vision" and more "furniture wishlist." But if you're dreaming about the future, might as well do it from an Eames chair.
