I’ve done it myself: couldn’t hear anything behind me on a quietish one-way street so just stepped out and nearly got flattened. Have also ended up with a bad head injury after someone did it as I was cycling by at ~30km/h!

The access rules to canal paths etc. are different in Scotland to the rest of the UK. Pavements are generally off limits to cyclists, but often these “shared” pavements are used in some places, but in my experience they often just lead to unnecessary conflict between users.

In Scotland, (more or less) all paths are shared use and accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders. Still fairly common to get idiots shouting at folk on bikes though.
