A key task for authoritarians to consolidate their power is erasing history. This is much more easily done when no one knows any to begin with.
It's abundantly clear this is part of a wider attempt to suppress a heresy, to crush any institutions whose mission says, "An endless cycle of getting and gaining is *not* the sum total of human existence."
Those institutions -- museums, libraries, universities -- all have to go to the wall.
