Brian Dillon writes an entire chapter about this very sentence in his book Suppose a Sentence, which i happen to be reading on the side and had no idea it included a Middlemarch chapter until i ran into it last night! 🛖

TIL it was Criterion that popularized director's commentary and letterboxing. i was just going through the Criterion Collection yesterday because i was mildly devastated that i missed their flash sale. some of my favorite directors in the collection are Wong Kar-Wai, Edward Yang, and Céline Sciamma.
