Workers have been collectively going on strike for fair pay and better conditions for a long time.
As far as we know, for more than three thousand years.
November 14, 1152 BCE: the first recorded workers' strike occurred in ancient Egypt under Pharaoh Ramses III. Artisans and laborers working on the royal tombs at Deir el-Medina stopped working in protest of delayed and insufficient rations, a form of wages. collezioni.museoegizio.it/en-GB/materi...

The basic problem with the temporary refugee status policy - especially one lasting up to 20 years - is it leads to very few removals (based on Denmark's experience) but does significantly worsen integration.

Humanity has quietly passed a remarkable milestone: Alcohol consumption is declining, a turning point in a habit at least as old as civilization itself. This unnoticed shift suggests other long-standing habits (from smoking to red meat consumption) could potentially fade just as effortlessly.

The murderous attack from the air on defenceless civilians, in cynical pursuit of political aims is met with horror in the case of Ukraine, and in the case of Palestinians with indifference.

In Ireland, since Covid there has been a strong sustained increase in teen employment, especially for girls working part-time.

Brings home the full insanity of it all. USA dismantling production in an area, clean energy, where it had (thanks to IRA) a good claim to comparative advantage. And raising #tariffs against countries like Vietnam so as to reshore footwear and low-end electronics production 🙄

Oh and the climate...
Billions of dollars in clean energy projects have been canceled since Donald Trump took office again — leaving thousands of jobs and the shift to clean energy in doubt.
A stunning number of electric vehicle, battery factories are being canceled

Great essay by @adamtooze.bsky.social that explores why Palestine is so central to US campus politics. This section is worth highlighting, as it articulates the shortcomings of framing anti-Palestine repression primarily through discourses of free speech or Democracy v Authoritarianism (link below)

NEW 🧵 Is human intelligence starting to decline?

Recent results from major international tests show that the average person’s capacity to process information, use reasoning and solve novel problems has been falling since around the mid 2010s

What should we make of this?
