DND campaign ended tonight after we defeated a dinosaur amalgam we dubbed "the Horrorzord," prompting a planar ship to sail out of a volcano to pick us up. My buddy has the best flair for the ridiculous and awesome. Power metal the whole way through.

With all the awesome posts compiled in this year's Bloggies, I'm finding a lot of #ttrpg and #osr blogs I want to follow, but I don't have a good tool to keep up to date on any particular blog. Anyone have tools they could share?

Doing my first real close read-through of the B2 module, and I have to admit that I'm just getting dissonance when reading #osr play expectation back onto the text and the actual implication of the dungeon design. The most natural way I see of playing this module as a PC is novel combat tactics.

Me: Path of Exile 2 Early Access launches today! I'm so hyped!

My projects:

I have a buddy who's going to run a time-hopping/time-fixers style campaign here soon. He's stuck on what system to use. Anyone from the #osr or #ttrpg feeds have any recommendations?

Why You Should Nominate For the Bloggies
Way back in 2022, the Prismatic Wasteland blog hosted an award called the Bloggies. The award was designed to showcase the best blog-posts to appear on an RPG blog during the course of that year. H…

I feel this. It took me a full 6 months to recover, and that was only after being able to direct all my energy into recovery. It's crazy how fast the wick can burn and reach critical levels.
Burnout straight up destroyed me. It was an ordeal to even do basic daily tasks for my job. Wild executive dysfunction and mood swings. Been recovering about a year but I’m not back to 100 (and I’m not sure I ever will be).
Finally connected the dots between long term burnout issues and feeling physically incapable of checking my email

After soaking in a lot of blog posts about fantasy sandbox campaigns over the years, I wish two things were made way more clear. First, it's critically important to treat the map as a game board you're designing. Second, the rumor table is load-bearing.

Just a reminder that I run a Discourse forum for OSR & other Indie RPGs. If you're not up for the ephemeral chat of Discord and you yearn for more long-form discussions, please have a look! It's been quiet for a while but with the death of Twitter I aim to change that.

#TTRPG and #OSR peeps, I want to hear your favorite overland travel systems/procedures.

I'm always torn because it really needs to justify itself being there, so I want to know which ones really enhance play by offering interesting choices.

Colville drops an interesting vid related a bit to all this #osr discourse. As there were D&D(s) since the very beginning, we have OSR(s) now. I think embracing the lack of consensus and the sharing of ideas about what this all can be is how we don't cede the territory.

Same as it ever was...

Optimist: The cup is half full.
Pessimist: The cup is half empty.

Production editor: ...okay, but where's the other half of the manuscript? The weird cup-shaped pages lost us a month with the printer.
Optimist: The cup is half full.
Pessimist: The cup is half empty.

TTRPG editor: pretty sure the house style guide has guidance for this, but it's currently being used as a coaster for the cup.

OSR games appeal to me because they can convey the "zero to hero" journey, so consequence/lethality with in-built character development? Sign me up.
In Apocalypse World, when a character dies, the player gets four choices.

They come back a little bit more frail

They come back a little bit weirder and more mystical

They change playboook (ie. class)

They die

I think this could easily be added to OSR games to make lethality more narrative

The part of the “old school” worth reviving has never been THAC0 or fighting orcs in gray corridors but the DIY attitude of design that ceased once D&D grew from being just a Game to being a Brand

I know better than to try, but I wonder if it'd be possible to design a #ttrpg around Disco Elysium's fever dream of a trait/skill system, with all these voices pushing and pulling you with impulses and insights. Does it require too much to be pre-written? Maybe only ever possible as a solo RPG?

Really thankful for the starter pack feature and the people who make them for newbies like me. So much easier to start getting in on the conversation.
