I (middle-aged person) have noticed that because everything is supposed to be self-service, people don't know how to give service when that is part of their job (because they haven't experienced getting it and no one has taught them how to give it) and: people don't know how to get service.
That’s true. The point of the trend was that the disinterested retail staffer genuinely does not know and does not understand why there is a customer expectation that they should know. That’s the cultural phenomenon under discussion.
extremely skeptical that this is a Gen Z phenomenon; the uninterested and uninformed retail staffer is a comic stereotype dating at least back to the 1970s, if not earlier. (c.f., for instance, Viz's Lazy Disinterested 16-Year-Old Shoe Shop Girl, mid-1990s)
