Poland hosting IO44'

Among TOP20 economies only PL alongside Saudi Arabia and Indonesia never had the Olympcis (nor bid for 2036)

Warsaw hosting 2044 Olympics - the ancient symbol of peace - exactly 100 year after being razed in WW2, would be one of the most inspirational tales in sport history!

Wow!

Check out this cool working paper.

"War Causes Religiosity"

The authors scraped web images of hundreds of thousands of gravestones of deceased Americans.

They found that people who were randomly drafted into war are at least 20% more likely to have religious gravestones.

Does the accumulation of assets shape vote choice?

In our new paper @bjpols.bsky.social with Justin Robinson & @sofiavasilopoulou.bsky.social we assess the effects of within-person changes in patrimony on party support in Britain

What % of GDP do you think your country spends on development assistance?

If your answer is above 0.1%, you likely overestimated

This graph by @eurcorrespond.bsky.social shows that not only few European countries reach that level, but many have fallen below in recent years (most notably UK)

One of the most shocking pieces of news not linked to the US this week...

Poland is about to equal Japan's GDP per capita (in PPP terms)

Lech Wałęsa is said to have promised that back in the 1980s, when Poland was still a communist country. Incredible to see that happen in a single lifetime...

If you ever wondered why the 'far-right' seems to be on the rise everywhere, the amazing work of @valentimvicente.bsky.social is the thing to read!
Blown away by this erudite book by @valentimvicente.bsky.social 🤯 An exceptional combination of theoretical sophistication and empirical breadth and depth.

His theory of normalization not just helps explain recent rise of far right but also warns for overestimating strength of democracy.

Phantom border?

Looking at the results of German elections across municipalities, it is hard not to observe a basically 1-to-1 match of AfD results with the former West-East Germany border.

History tends to stick around...
