Accountant. Cricket, all things food and wine, books, birds, running.
Medlar tart awaits. What a treat! Possibly.

Excitement, optimism, adrenaline. And then the crushing defeat. Ah how we enjoy the ashes! It would be nice if we could manage to occasionally rewrite the script in Australia! This one reminded me of the opening test of the 1990-91 ashes, when a tight low scoring game ended in 10 wicket thrashing!

We are very short of marshals this Saturday - if you are not sure what this involves have a look at the cut out and keep guide below. Apply via the link (other roles are available too!)

Currently listening to... This is great - weird electronic/pop.

With credit to Richard Godwins the spirits blog - Jack Rose. 50ml calvados, 10ml grenadine, 15ml lemon juice. I like this- but it does have that slight hint of farmyard you get with cider that I find slightly off putting (bad memories associated with a large bottle of old English cider ages 17...)

I think the 6 bottles of harrods amontillardo for £8.75 should do me nicely...

Nelson's toilet! (HMS victory). Epic. Albeit disappointing it wasn't on the poop deck.

Strong work on the Halloween decorations at the Portsmouth museum and art gallery!

Drinking my way through some of my late uncle's cellar. Alas, a lot of the bottles are well over the hill and no longer drinkable. However, this 25 year old Alsace riesling is a joy - delicate, lime, and beautiful. All the better as the previous younger Alsace riesling I'd tried was totally gone.

What a treat to hear Philip Pullman read an extract of his new book at the launch at St James's church in piccadilly - with a great panel including Katherine Rundell who obviously felt a great affection for his work. Really excellent event!

Couple of good bottles to celebrate the eldest reaching 18. Greywacke has really evolved with age - tropical fruit much more muted now, lovely wine. Must keep my next case this long! Stunning syrah- black olive tapenade flavours, and stunning long finish.

This sinister shaped cactus- a school fair purchase - brought to mind Daphne du Maurier's The Apple Tree. Now to terrify the children with my new cactus...

Taking my preparations for listening to the @backlisted.bsky.social maxwell revisit in a few weeks seriously! Last of his novels I hadn't read. It really is astonishing how much he packs into the sentences. This was a slow burner, but up there with his best. Can't wait for #250!

The gift of some of my late uncle's old records prompted me to excavate my amp, speakers and record player from the loft. I'm so glad I did. This Ben Webster record was excellent! The kids are enjoying the novelty of old tech, and getting to experience some excellent jazz!

Pernod monkey gland... I'm intrigued, albeit not sure whether this intrigues me enough to actually try it!

This was very weird and very dark. First experience of Angela Carter! Now need to go back to the @backlisted.bsky.social early episode on her

Brittany bats! A cool end to a warm day!

Delighted to see a crested tit for the first time while holidaying in Brittany. Popped up on merlin yesterday near a car park- long walk in the sun today trying to spot one (heard several, but they were proving elusive). Finally saw a pair of them just before reaching the car at the end of the walk!

Some decent birding so far in Brittany. Pleased to spot a cirl bunting for the first time. Merlin has picked up hawfinches each of the last two days but not managed to lay eyes on them. This morning few birds but I did have a close encounter with this hare!

Great locklisted episode from @backlisted.bsky.social today - i particularly enjoyed @iammilliam.bsky.social casually slipping in his knowledge of two bits of football trivia in the episode - have i missed this awareness previously- or has this been picked up by osmosis from co-hosts?!

@backlisted.bsky.social am reading Erotic vagrancy on Andy's recommendation- was amused to read this about Ronald Fraser who was in fact still in his 40s in Wild Geese. He had not aged well- due to the drinking habits described here filming swallows &amazons sophieneville.net/2013/12/21/o...

Saturday night cocktail was a bicicletta spritz. Equal parts Italian white wine, campari, and soda water, with lots of ice and slice of orange. Very fitting for the weather. No photo alas!

Clover club cocktail made with fresh raspberries. Looked good - albeit bit too sweet to properly hit the spot!
