A battlefield of ash and bone, before we stand - blessèd, god-touched, weeping - before Miquella's high throne

An ashen battlefield atop the pale city. The ground is ash and bones, and a low stone railing obscured by mist gives way to an epic view of the black-and-gold Scadutree and its veils. The sky beyond is yellow cloud around the obscured sun, dipping into bruise-green as the cloud cover recedes. A spiralling tower of grey stone cuts vertically across the view, beside a small domed tower topped in red terracotta. An ashen battlefield atop the city, where a single shard of Grace shines from broken paving beneath a yellow sky. A broken stone railing topped with robed statues curves around to the right, to a vast throne of ash and bone, eroded stairs leading up to a cleft between two towers thronged with stone bodies hanging like ivy. The top of the towers is a crescent, throning the bright sun as it fails to fully pierce the cloud. Gille the Confessor stands before Miquella's throne, her sword and shield at the ready, and with Miquella's rune a crescent above her golden circlet. The two pillars of the throne loom against a dark yellow sky, the stone bodies that clamber up the stonework looking disturbingly like tortured souls so close up. The rising sun shines golden through the cleft at the heart of the throne, blazing down on her and casting bright godrays down over her shoulders. Deep below the cerulean coast, in a purple-drenched chamber we've visited before, Saint Trina lies dead on the floor. Her vivid purple hair flows outwards from her outstretched arm, and her purple robes stand like a poisonous flower in her wake. A glorious wisp of white and gold rises from her corpse.

The "can I get far enough away to use the telescope, or do I need to find a helpful rock/tree/hanging bracket to wedge the camera up against?" ended up being a lot of the fun 😅

At the moment the alt-text is there on hover on desktop, and if you long-press on an image on mobile Chrome, at least.

I remember having some challenges getting it surfaced in a more immediate form on mobile when I built the site, but it's something I should revisit when time allows 😅

Most of all, this project has given me a whole host of wonder and fresh appreciation for the sheer talent of FromSoft's artists and designers.

I wasn't sure I even *wanted* an open-world Souls game at first, but they crafted a glorious world to explore with my camera!

This has been a massive undertaking since I started this project back in April 2024.

In total, I took 3691 photos of this beautiful, horrific world, and edited and curated them into 18 albums of my journey through the Lands Between and the Land of Shadow.

To the heights of Enir-Ilim, where we prepare to go to war with a demigod

A view across upper Enir-Ilim, where stalactite-like columns descend from the top-most layer above, and vast pillars with spiral carvings hold up the roof. The sky is filled with yellow clouds, and a stripe of greyish-green sky can be seen below. A ceremonial garden on the way up to the most sacred places in the city. An evenly-spaced row of golden trees grows along the left hand side, interspersed with statues of lions, and to the right, the path curves round to the foot of a long flight of stairs up to an octagonal domed building beneath the hanging pillars above. Beyond, the buildings grow ever-more magnificent, with heavy porticoes of grey stone and multi-tiered domes. A shard of Grace shining at the centre of a concentric circle mosaic, surrounded by arcs of light. The room is dim aside from a shaft of light coming from the left, and a purple wisp sits at the foot of a three-tiered grey stone altar at the far side of the room. The pillars in each corner of the room are carved in a diamond pattern, and low sets of stairs lead up into alcoves in each direction. A view of a large audience chamber from the entranceway. The floor is awash with grey ash, forming dunes beneath a single shaft of bright light from an oculus in the domed ceiling above; the dome is supported by a series of large spiralling pillars, each hung with spiralling curtains of grey cloth with gold trimmings.

Through antechambers and shrines, ever upwards

A large octagonal chamber in Enir-Ilim, with spiralling columns in each corner of the room, and a pair of golden-leaved trees flanking an archway leading to a wide set of stairs. There are concentric circle patterns inlaid into the floor, and a bright stone shines from atop a rumpled carpet in the centre of the room. The walls are decorated with hanging banners and storage shelves, and an altar-like structure with horned candlesticks and stone tablets carrying a single carved figure, as if a portable shrine. A peaceful octagonal chamber at the top of one of Enir-Ilim's towers. Each wall has three arched windows, and the sky beyond is filled with pink-orange clouds. The evening sunlight shines in gently from the left, drawing attention to the crisp concentric circles of the mosaiced floor. There are a few jars beside a staircase railing leading down, but otherwise the room is empty. A dark chamber shortly after sunset, filled with objects of ritual significance. The floor is decorated with concentric circles of mosaics, and a corpse with a flaming head sits crossed-legged on a ragged carpet, facing an altar covered with a faded cloth and lit by white candles. Behind the altar are two rows of carved effigies of venerated people, each carved to a different size and arrayed so the taller figures are most central in each group. There are ornate candlesticks and small metal arks, stone pillars topped with horned candelabra, and various finely-crafted jars and pots scattered around the altar. A wide spiral staircase of grey stone and thick spiralling columns, leading up past a pair of arched windows. The evening sun is shining through, painting the left-hand wall in glorious light. A golden sconce hangs from a fixing at the top of the current set of stairs, gleaming in the light, and the stairs continue round to the right.

I wouldn't say "hard" necessarily, but it can take a lot of time before you see results (and heavily dependent on the cat in question, of course).

With Poppy it took 6 months of daily training before she first pushed a button with an intent behind it.

The spiralling architecture of the highest city

A golden cross-and-sickle shines from a circular mosaic at the centre of the room. Heavy spiralling pillars rise out of sight, and a wide spiral staircase runs around the edge of the room, ascending to arched windows high above. The city of Enir-Ilim hanging in a green-gold sky. The lower half is a row of buildings running beneath an ornate balustrade, and regularly-spaced pillars hang like stalactites from a dark roof far above. A curving stairway can be seen suspended in the background, held up by pillars which dissolve into stone carvings of human bodies at their lowest point. The red-tiled rooftops of the pale grey city, leading the eye towards the Scadutree in the distance. In the foreground, a cluster of stone carvings like misshapen bodies jut from a spiralling pillar, and fine white ash cakes the tiles just below. In the mid-ground, the sloping rooftops give way to other shapes, including a spire and an octagonal domed building. A rising facade of pale grey stone against a yellowed sky. There are so many different textures of stone: spiralled columns, archways with horn motifs, clusters of carved corpses erupting from the stonework, and larger, more abstract figures and winged creatures carved in smooth flowing motion. There are occasional pops of pale pink where the roof tiles show, though the larger patches are mostly covered in fine grey ash. To the left, the facade dips away to reveal a series of hanging pillars, like ornate stalactites.

Then she did a quick strut around the board and pushed "Help Snack Music Litter" in one quick burst, and sat there purring.

Her body language was satisfied, so our current suspicion is that she was saying "you helped me with all these things!" 😻
