Like many things happiness-related, money’s effect on us is simple and it’s complicated.

But maybe the reason we never find an answer to the question “Can money buy happiness?” is because we’re asking the wrong question.

Maybe the right question is: What truly makes me happy?

Reminder: People who are more connected to family, to friends, and to community, are happier and physically healthier than people who are less well connected.

Success in life is often measured by title, salary, and recognition of achievement, even though most of us understand that these things do not necessarily make for a happy life on their own.

Life, even when it’s good, is not easy. There is simply no way to make life perfect, and if there were, then it wouldn’t be good.

In my conversation with Deepak Chopra, we explored an important insight: instead of just asking, “What makes me happy?” we should ask, “Who is asking?” The idea of a fixed “self” doesn’t hold up. True contentment comes from seeing ourselves as part of a greater whole.

Buddhist philosophy, the bedrock of Zen, teaches us that life is inherently unsatisfactory due to its constant change. We often resist what we dislike, but accepting impermanence is the path to finding peace.

Zen teaches that “ordinary mind is the way.” True joy isn’t in the future—it’s in the present. When we stop chasing and start noticing, life becomes vast and full.

There’s no final destination in life, only a journey. Deepak Chopra and I discussed how contentment isn’t a fixed endpoint but a continual process. True peace comes from embracing life’s flow—both highs and lows. How do you navigate your journey?

Pleasure isn’t the enemy - chasing emotional highs is. Real joy comes from simple, lasting experiences: friends, nature, music, and play. It’s about balance, not deprivation

In my conversation with @deepakchopra.bsky.social, we explored how income, education, and location impact health and life expectancy. But when it comes to happiness, studies show that after meeting basic needs (~$75k/yr), more money isn't the path to happiness. Wealth doesn’t equal fulfillment.

In my research and work as a psychotherapist and Zen teacher, I've witnessed the profound impact of human connection on our well-being. It's not about awards or comparisons, but about serving others and finding meaning in our connections to those around us.

Did you know we all have a happiness set point? Research shows that even after winning the lottery or facing tragedy, people eventually return to their usual happiness levels. But the good news? We can take action to boost our well-being.

Privilege impacts longevity—but not happiness. In my chat with Deepak Chopra, we discussed the Harvard Study’s findings: privileged men lived 10 years longer, but both groups reported similar happiness levels. Happiness isn’t defined by wealth—true fulfillment comes from our connections.
