Like many things happiness-related, money’s effect on us is simple and it’s complicated.

But maybe the reason we never find an answer to the question “Can money buy happiness?” is because we’re asking the wrong question.

Maybe the right question is: What truly makes me happy?

In my conversation with Deepak Chopra, we explored an important insight: instead of just asking, “What makes me happy?” we should ask, “Who is asking?” The idea of a fixed “self” doesn’t hold up. True contentment comes from seeing ourselves as part of a greater whole.
