They've been seeing the lights all week, and it's a thrill every time, but never like this. This is like standing in front of an oil painting when you've only ever seen a photocopy of a print of a watercolour forgery before. Between the roofs of the small town, colours swoop and pulse and billow against the dark backdrop of the universe, as though the entire sky is dancing some kind of vast alien ballet. Stede is dimly aware he's grabbed Ed's arm and Ed's grabbed him right back, both of them holding on like they need an anchor to the world in the commotion of all this silent movement, but neither of them say anything. Nobody around them is speaking either. People are just staring upwards, frozen, hushed by awe. They start walking at some point, no discussion about it, simply a shared need to be somewhere more open to properly experience this, and end up in a wide open stretch of snow about halfway between the town and the hotel. Ed is the first to collapse on his back between the criss-crossing lines of boot prints, for once absolutely heedless of the cold, and Stede joins him in making a pair of giddy, fidgety, side by side snow angels under the electric illumination of the aurora. "It's so pretty," Stede says after who knows how long. Feels like it might have been years, like being stuck in fairyland, hypnotised by the shifting lights. It's not enough of a compliment for the impossible wonder they're looking at, but then what even could be? "Yeah," Ed agrees, sounding just as awestruck as Stede does. "Appreciate the flag colours. Thanks, sky." "Bi sky," Stede says at once, never able to resist a rhyme. Beside him in the snow, he hears the soft outward breath of an almost-laugh. "Nature's saying hello to you, personally." "Bi sky, my sky," Ed agrees. "Phwoar sky. Your sky." That gets an actual, real, proper giggle out of Ed, and Stede grins to himself. Then, for no reason he can fathom and without any warning that it's about to happen, he hears himself quietly add, "Ed? If you were the sky, I'd look at you all night."

"Blackbeard me," Stede begs later, flushed from ten minutes of sloppy kissing in their pyjamas after an indulgent shared bath, a bottle of malbec, and a charcuterie dinner eaten off a tray on the marble side. "Yeah?" Ed murmurs, going back in for another go as his fingers creep to the thigh hem of Stede's satin romper. Stede submits at once, kissing back hungrily and thrusting his fingers into Ed's damp hair. It tugs, but it's fucking nice. An electric little thrill of something that's not quite pain but maybe just the suggestion that pain is close by, always ready, if they ever want to reach for it. "Please," Stede begs again, vibrating the soft plea against Ed's tingling mouth. "Anything you like. Something you really like. Please?"

"Ooh, are we doing group hugs?" Fang asks, appearing in the archway with Barbie and Daphne at his heels. "No," comes Izzy's disembodied, distant voice from somewhere back in the workshop. Fang ignores him, wedging himself into the far too small last bit of space on Lucius's other side and reaching across to cuddle all three of them. "Ivan's fetching the sammies, but squish up, make room for him over there," he says while the dogs scramble up to find comfy spots on the various available laps, and it's just really bloody hard to hold onto a good sulk these days now Stede's got friends like these.

"Great!" Stede exclaims, way too loud and excited and relieved, and now neither of them can stop laughing as he promptly drops the box in his haste to get the ring out of it and onto Ed's finger. It's hammered silver, beautifully textured and uneven, the ends of the band wrapping around to hug the top and bottom of a silver piece like the one on Stede's leather collar. Set into the bezel is another tiny chip of seaglass: not the seafoamy-aqua that's Stede's favourite, but a deep, rich purple, exactly the colour of the socks Stede promised to knit him on that first unreal, magical night.

"You close?" Ed asks when he's about at the point of it being too late, huffing the words quietly and urgently against Stede's sweating neck, and Stede laughs in that way he's got that somehow doesn't make Ed feel laughed at—just, soft and sweet and fucking tender with his fingers curling in the back of Ed's hair to lift him out of his hiding place. "No? Are you?" "Yeah," Ed admits, still pounding away with increasingly more erratic jerks of his hips. Stede's gentle amusement turns into a giggle. "Edward," he says, pretending to be annoyed but absolutely not succeeding because he looks far too pleased with himself behind the mask of wrinkled nose and scrunched eyebrows. "We only started two minutes ago!" "Yeah, but I'm pretty drunk and you're really fucking hot," Ed complains. He lightly slaps Stede's thigh, both legs raised to clutch like a greedy fist around his waist. "Look at this. Two fucking sexiest legs on Planet Earth. You're lucky I made it two minutes." Stede snuggles his head deeper into the floppy feather pillow and tugs a tiny bit harder at the back of Ed's hair to make some space between their faces, enough for some eye contact. He's all flushed and sweaty and absolutely thrilled with himself, like he's done something on purpose to earn this and it's not just because he's some kind of weird posh blond gorgeous sexual kryptonite to Ed's dick without even trying. "It's okay," he says, and that fucking dimple flashes into being in the gold-silver scruff of his stubble. "Go on." "What, come?" Now his grin is showing the wonky line of his pointy teeth. "If you need to." Ed scowls. "No. Fuck off. I'm a famous sex icon. I'm really good at sex. I'll—" His words stutter and stretch into a ragged moan that's not quite a yelp of surprise but not far off it when Stede's eyes crinkle with mischief and he does something probably fucking borderline illegal with his arse, clenching briefly tighter around Ed's buried dick. "You'll what?" Giggling now too, arms trembling to hold his weight up, Ed says, "You're fucking diabolical." "That's slander," Stede says primly, and when does it again a few more times, pulsing around him like a greedy sucking mouth, Ed fucking whimpers like the air escaping a balloon. "See you in court, fucker," he manages, breathless, helplessly laughing. "Seriously, babe. I'll come." "Mmhm," Stede says, starting a slow, even rhythm of muscle crimes. "I said it's okay. Go on, please." Dredging up a last bit of energy from fuck knows where, Ed rears back to sit on his heels, dragging Stede with him by the hips so he's tilted up the length of Ed's thighs and still hot, tight, sweet, fucking maddening around him. The sudden motion surprises him and his legs flail away from Ed's waist in some reflexive attempt to keep his balance, so Ed grabs both opportunity and an ankle, shoving Stede's knee up near his pierced pink nipples. "Menace," he accuses, and turns to sink his teeth into Stede's calf. "At least I'm polite about it." Stede stops his dick torture and wiggles his foot, tensing his calf muscle instead until the careful grip of Ed's teeth slides harmlessly off his skin, leaving a ring of pink indents and a patch of spit that glints in the low lamplight. Ed kisses the mark he made, drawing another little grin onto Stede's face. "Kraken-no?" Stede asks, gently rubbing his thumb across the purple seaglass ring that somehow feels to Ed like it's been on his finger forever even though it's only been two days. They're both pretty drunk, really. It's always fun, one of them throwing the other at the bed and getting some ravishing done, and frequently it's silly, but a certain level of cocktails gets them in an extra-silly, extra-affectionate, competitive, playful, teasing sort of place that Ed only ever wants to leave for the guaranteed thrill of slipping back into it again the next time. "No krakens," he says quickly. "Do it again."
