This argument that we need to adopt fascism-lite to prevent electing fascists is a big ahistorical lie, and it has a lot of currency in Canada too. This will not solve any problems fascists blame on refugees, while it concedes the idea that they're correct to blame them. This is how you get ICE.
UK set to limit refugees to temporary stays
Shabana Mahmood is expected to say the era of permanent protection for refugees is over, in major changes to the UK's asylum and immigration system.

By surrendering so utterly and completely at a moment of their maximum leverage and momentum, Senate Democrats taught Trump and his cadre an important lesson: Do enough damage and your opponents will buckle. Because of this surrender, our democracy is more imperiled now than it was before.

Without asylum:

Marks and Spencer wouldn't exist

Queen would have been without a front man

The other queen wouldn't have had a husband

Judith Kerr would never have written The Tiger Who Came to Tea

And thousands of less famous people wouldn't have been teachers, politicians, neighbours, etc

Temerko, a Soviet-born oligarch and a major Conservative donor, told Belton that he and Johnson spent time… plotting the overthrow May. According to Temerko, Johnson had finally been persuaded to back Brexit in 2016 by a group of “eastern European businessmen”.

Anyone who’s ever used emergency contraception or gains peace of mind by even having it on hand owes Dr Camp a debt of gratitude. What a force.

(Also, I just learned one reason the FDA rejected it at first was that they said the name Plan B was too glib!)

Great obit—no paywall.

The phrase “the dog that didn’t bark” comes from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes story Silver Blaze (1892).

Holmes notes a dog’s silence during a theft as the key clue—it didn’t bark because the intruder was familiar.

Although many people are saying it, I do not believe our current president sucked off former president Bill Clinton on camera. I have not seen sufficient evidence that our current president gave the former president a blowie in a way that was memorialized in a photo. That's not something I believe.

As the pro AI lobby continues to peddle their shit, their latest claim is that AI will create “better”Ads, a notion that falls foul of even the lightest questioning as to whom such ads would be “better” for.
