It was a great few days. Actually I've just remembered I pottered around Cornwall on 4 or 5 trains on the third day then got the sleeper back. Now I'm based in Glasgow I should really be procrastinating while rushing through the Highlands more often rather than in my kitchen...

In a time before kids I used to do exactly this from time to time (railcards made it fairly reasonable). Oh the things that got achieved on the way to and from Newark, Grantham et al. Last hurrah was a 3 day London - Aberdeen - Penzance (direct) - London a month before my first was born. Bliss.

Unfortunately they're neither magic, nor that cheap, but there are a surprising number of "Ranger and Rover" options from National Rail (not a couple of cartoon dogs, but tickets for unlimited travel in certain areas/times). All line rover is £540 for 7 days.

To wrap it back to the original point. The anticipation is still there to be monetised (If Team X can win this, they might have a chance to compete in a competition where something might happen in 18 months time), and the ongoing nature is of course baked in. But it feels like a feature, not a bug.

A school athletics meeting can be more exciting than the Olympics. Following the journey of some amateur enthusiasts to compete at the Commonwealth games can be it's own multi-series thriller. And the various structures of sporting endeavour mean there's always a new 'thing' to get into.

And as for the commercialisation of sport and the many related ills, I can just watch the sport being played in its purer form elsewhere. Do I watch the Premier League? Sure. Do I prefer the Australian A-League. I do. Would I watch a game live from Gambia? I have.

Sport just... happens. If it's shit, well, there you go. That's just another of the infinite ways things can pan out when people play by certain rules. Tune in next time and it might just blow your mind. A bad match exists to enhance the experience over a lifetime, not as something to grade on IMDB.

I love my TV, theatre, film, books and all the rest of it. But I became enamoured with sport as a kid as an extension of the emotional engagement I got from those things. And for the many, many times "you have to stick with it" has been levelled at TV et al, sport just doesn't have that option.

You get the backstory (rivalries, redemption stories, historic highs and lows), the immediate context (must-win encounter, a hero returns, statistical milestone), and the specifics of the game/match/race. Nothing in unbelievable because if it happened, it happened. And when it ends, that's it.

I just think there's no shortage of brilliant, entertaining football going on each week, that maybe fans of the beautiful game could be introduced to more of that, and less of the 'you've really got to being doing better from there' analysis.

Maybe I'm too much of an outlier. I'm the guy watching Indian Super League and Singapore Premier League games for the afternoon chaos, getting fascinated by the Belgian league run-in each season and looking forward to the return of football in Iceland.

And much of it hard to watch or follow for even a hardened fan. Imagine a weekly big European game on the BBC: Ajax v PSV. Benfica v Porto. Leverkusen v Munich. Inter v AC. ITV has some of the La Liga clashes and Sky Mix has the odd German game for free. But packaged well, I think it could be great.
