Delighted to share the story of two germline RBPs - one with little (DND1) and one with no (NANOS3) intrinsic sequence-specificity - that together build a continuous RNA binding surface recognizing a 7-mer (AUGAAUU) in target mRNA 3’UTRs, leading to deadenylation.

Everyone should read this. The take home: we will be less heathy if we cut NIH funding.
This paper does a great job with a "It's a Wonderful Life" scenario about NIH, supposing the consequences of the bottom 40% of the funding NIH grants never existed.

A clinical trial is a huge undertaking, a multi year commitment.
Ending a $5 million research study when it is 80% complete does not save $1 million it wastes $4 million.

A weird thing happened in scientific publishing during COVID. And it hasn’t gone away. Publications went up 30-50%. And responses to requests to review went down 30-50%. I know the actual statistic…

One step is court orders. Today, a small piece of good news for NIH.
Another step is large-scale protest.
