My latest essay “How to write hopeful sci-fi futurism when everything sucks” (substack in bio) is about how I source the knowledge and optimism to write sci-fi futures I believe are possible, even when we seem to slip further from them daily. it’s about why and how to fight for a better world.

I annotated my PhD research paper (just published in eLife) with a comment condemning eLife’s decision last year to fire their editor-in-chief over his public expression of pro-Palestine sentiments. My latest substack post (l!nk in bio) explains more and includes an accessible research overview. 🧪

Feeling powerless? Start organizing. Form a labor union in your workplace. Form a tenant association. Volunteer for labor and tenant unions if you’re not in a position to form one yourself. The more organized we are, the more power we have to force the world to change for the better.

Unrelated, but in the same conversation I learned that leeches are still used in western medicine for amputation care, and they’re expensive because they can only be used once.
How do you prepare for winter? Just moved to Denver and a friend said, The trick is to donate blood when it starts getting cold. You’re colder for a while but then your winter blood grows in thicker. 💀🥶🩸For context, this person is from Reno.

What has helped your climate despair/anxiety 🌍🔥? For me, it’s been labor and tenant organizing. Taking power from the corporations and the wealthy. 💚✊🏻

Accepting critique on writing, art, etc. is so much easier with an understanding of statistics. Considering the infinite set of ways you could have written it, that paragraph you just scribbled is not the global optimum--not even for 1 reader, let alone for all. There is always room for improvement.

The influence of capitalism on mainstream environmentalism cannot be overstated.

- board appointees
- philanthropy industry
- highly paid staff
- drive towards fundraising instead of campaigning
- cash reserves instead of spending

Wonder why most orgs don't want to confront the system...

Hope and anger are not mutually exclusive; they cooperate constructively in climate action. Guiding people to be a part of the solution, through organizing and resistance, requires both of these emotions. The ‘we’re all fucked no matter what’ mentality that hopelessness creates is not helpful.
