I suspect, without systematic evidence, that standardization on 'fae' has a lot to do with the early oughts' urban fantasy boom in the US, when 'fairy' was still a homophobic slur of some currency here.

It was the unity that was so fun. All the other smart stuff we said was varied and we sometimes disagreed or worked very differently. On genAI we spoke with one irate and long-suffering voice.
