I haven’t seen anyone observe that “doge” was the title of the head of state of Venice in the Renaissance and earlier. The word is Venetian Italian and means “leader.” It has the same Latin root as standard Italian “duce,” Mussolini’s title. Doges ruled for life. Surely this is not a coincidence.

I have loved Canada since the 1970s when I was a grad student in theology at the University of St Michael’s College in the University of Toronto. I have had Canadian friends since that time. It pains me to see our government picking an unnecessary fight with our good neighbor Canada.
