Tech journalist recovering from getting hit by (and very nearly killed by) a pickup in July. Original (locked out) handle: rjfaas.bsky.social

So a bit of background. I was splitting my time between DC and upstate NY for the past year. In July a potential opportunity got me to head to the Midwest, where during my first visit to Toledo, I was struck by a pickup truck and spent nearly three months hospitalized.
Also is it weird that having finally replaced my Apple Watch, I feel like a more complete and functional person?

This morning as kingon on her way to Saratoga comic con.

This afternoon a psychotic homeless man that smells like a hamster cage and is doing disco moves.

Gotta love public transit.

There’s a Klingon woman with a batleth on this bus.

Apparently there a con happening. I may need to check this out.

New digital nomad home. Right in the middle of worksites from when I was an IT director 20 years ago. Pretty sure I know it better than my Airbnb host.

But I’m back in NY and not Ohio. Yay!!!

Yay! My old pcp’s practice is taking over my medical care and follow-up. I feel so much better knowing this.

The receptionist was dumbstruck when I explained I needed an appointment but the magic of Epic filled in more details than I could #efr

Syracuse. Yay. Almost there. It does feel good being in NY state again.

Four hours to go.

I just heard someone randomly shout “Ina” - I suspect it’s not the barefoot contessa taking a cross country train. Made my exhausted face smile though.

I am honored that our show, Star Trek: Prodigy, is nominated for @theemmys.tv for both Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Multiple Role Voice Performer. I love Janeway and portraying her is a delight, in all her forms.

I can’t listen to the spice girls without picturing Bernadette from The Big Bang Theory in a beauty pageant.

And now we have Shanti/Ashanti by Madonna, which I’ll admit I included in a yoga class once.

Back when I could do (let alone teach) yoga. That’s the pt goal but it’s gonna take an awful lot and a lot of time to get there.

Clearly my thought this spring that my license expires in December, I’ll just wait till then to do the real id thing was a mistake.

Some days (most days) I’m so enmeshed with technology that it seems blasé… and then I have moments that make me marvel at what power we carry with us everyday.

Maybe I’m just old but I just added lots of music wirelessly in no time that I once waited to go to the mall and buy on cassette.

And I’ve moved onto Galileo by the indigo girls.

“Maybe you squandered a few books that I have to pay. But then it feels like some kind of inspiration… I think I’ll write a book…”

Listened to that a whole lot while writing my first 1186 page book (in eight months)… the things we can do in our 20s

Onto the Strange New Worlds musical.

“Keep us connected” also hits my heart.

“All my life has been fix this and save us… am I at best on my own? … I’ll keep us connected…”

That has been my life. Until a few months ago anyway.

Listening to the Buffy musical score while waiting for the train back east.

“Give me something to sing about” hits a lot different now.

“… all the twists and bends, knowing that it ends, well that depends… there was no pain, no fear, no doubt, till they pulled me out…”

Finally out of all hospitals. Waiting to get a train back to NYs capital region so I can visit my dad and see how his dementia and skin cancer has progressed while I’ve been in hospital.

But train gets here at 3:30 am. So I’m hanging in a Starbucks. Don’t know what to to with the next 13+ hours.

Good news from this morning’s ortho appointment: my shoulder that was destroyed in my accident has healed such that I won’t need surgery.

But it will take months to recover range of motion and strength. Hopefully not in this nursing home.

Two comments: first I’ve always hated Dulles and use BWI whenever possible.

I’ve avoided Dulles my entire time living in DC and a good decade plus before that. .

second, those things are called “mobile lounges”?!? They’re weird busses that are part of the reason i hate Dulles.
At least 18 hospitalized after mobile lounge crashes at Dulles Airport
A people mover shuttling passengers at Washington Dulles International Airport hit the dock of a building, causing non-life-threatening injuries.
