The costs of the UK’s Global Talent Visa looks a trifle high in comparison to competitor countries - largely through the Immigration Health Surcharge (which critics say is a form of double taxation as they contribute to the NHS through normal tax on their earnings)

In general I think it's hard to combat scientific misinformation when some of the best research is locked behind an academic paywall, while lots of nonsense gets published free for everyone to read in predatory journals.

Scientists are encouraged to produce science that responds to policy priorities but it’s crucial to also produce science that challenges policy priorities, and I feel UK research funders and universities have lost sight of that a bit.

More and more international researchers I talk to are choosing not to visit the US in the current political climate. Over time, I think this will complicate information exchange between US and international researchers, slowing the process of scientific discovery.

“Sustainable research excellence depends on the people who make it happen. Environments that support career development, recognise diverse contributions, and foster inclusion don’t just feel better to work in – they produce better research”

But they're seriously under threat… 1/3

We need to show our MPs that voters care about the evidence behind big decisions.

I've just voted and submitted my question about the evidence behind policies that are important to me - please do the same.

Arun Durvasula, PhD, of @uscpphs.bsky.social writes, "Lifestyle factors play a large role in determining who gets a disease and who doesn’t. But they are far from the entire story."

A fascinating read about the relationship between genetics and our environment. ⬇️ 🔗

Environmental factors such as lifestyle and the medications you take influence the effects your genes have on your body − and can clarify how diseases develop.

TLDR; Race/Ethnicity - a self identification process about a categorical group is v different from the high dimensional variation in the genome despite a thin connection by visible traits
