Still riding the vibe from yesterday's toke on the "Mamdani victory is bad news for the Democrats" pipe, Ross Douthat looks at his remaining chips, utters "screw it", and shoves them all towards the middle of the table.

Yes! I loved that show. The story arc with the late Fred Thompson as a media savvy huckster who energizes white supremacists into a violent movement was eerily prescient.

Ross Douthat makes a very comfortable living from gaslighting and sane washing. Meanwhile, a significant influencer in his party just platformed Nick Fuentes. But do go on with the "nothing to see here", Ross.

"Believe me when I say to you, I hope the Russians love their children too."

@daviddark.bsky.social channeling Flannery O'Connor has me thinking about Sting. As Dark says, "Art *plays* with limits and overcomes them." Everything that rises must converge. #EverydayApocalypse

I became familiar with the work of @nikostratis.com from her discussion on a podcast of Taylor Swift's Midnights. I've been following her work ever since and have eagerly awaited the release of this book. I'm four chapters/songs in and I can't get enough of its raw vulnerability, power, and beauty.

"And we are all so sick and tired of seeing things as they are." - Nick Cave from 'Bright Horses', one of twenty-two songs of intensity, passion, darkness, light, hope, & ecstasy he shared in Boston last night.

"We've all had too much sorrow, now is the time for joy" - 'Joy' from Wild God

"...a reminder that what might seem normal, predictable, and inevitable can be resisted and resistance begins with a definition of what might be."

Timothy Snyder's ( @timothysnyder.bsky.social ) words are worth pondering on this particular celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Counting down my Top Ten albums of 2024
1. Wild God - Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

The album contains dropping notes and ecstatic swells, enacting a catharsis that never feels forced. Grounded in ambiguity, he is both “amazed of love” and “amazed of pain.” It is music for the moment.

Do you believe in providence? I was made aware of Spectrum when I was mistakenly tagged instead of @riqkquinn.bsky.social . The comic Rick and @davechisholmcomics.com created intrigued me and converged 2 of my pop culture passions: music & comics.

2. Cowboy Carter - Beyoncè

A lot of ink was spilled as to whether this was a true country album, whatever that means. Its brilliance lies in its being a Beyoncè album and a requiem for America, one we need now more than when this was released.

3. No Name - Jack White

This is a surprising, raucous garage blues ride with little splashes of classic rock riffs and funk vibes. Just crank up the volume and let the album blow you backward into your seat.

4 The Cure Songs of A Lost World

Songs of A Lost World has converted me to the power of The Cure. It does many things that American culture avoids: facing grief head-on, being honest about our broken natures and relationships, and contemplating aging.

5. Passage du Desir - Johnny Blue Skies/Sturgill Simpson

"They don't ask you what your name is when you get up to heaven/And thank God, I couldn't tell her, if I had to, who I am." Maybe not, but I move into deeper self-awareness with each listen.

6. Observations From A Crowded Room - Joy Oladokun

Deftly weaving folk-pop, gospel tinges, and hip-hop, Joy Oladokun explores with raw vulnerability the struggles of a black queer singer-songwriter in a city that feeds dreams and often consumes them.

7. Trail of Flowers - Sierra Ferrell

Listening to Sierra Ferrell causes chronological vertigo. It is simultaneously stepping into the past and glimpsing the future. This album solidifies her case as one of the more creative torchbearers for roots music.
