Johnnie To's THROW DOWN is set in a stylish 2004 Hong Kong where almost everyone is into judo and willing to accept a challenge in the middle of the street. It's odd and beautiful and one of the best things I've seen lately.

Bernard Hill as Yosser Hughes proved formative. The despair, mental anguish & the grim, black comedic prowess Hill brought to Yosser left its mark on a country reeling from economic barbarity & cruel politics. A yardstick performance to all that has followed. RIP Bernard

The Wild Bunch more than holds up 25 yrs between viewings but In-between those years I’ve played - obsessed - Red Dead Redemption & it’s weird that it’s my first reference point when watching a revisionist western from 1968.

I like to think that on a parallel world Graham Green’s vengeance spirit of Clearcut (1991) went on to fulfil a movie universe where he was conjured up to terrorise, kidnap and skin corporate magnates before disappearing again in the nearest body of water as the police close in.

Not heard much about Ducournau’s next film, there were rumblings last year of a project with A24, but after my rewatch of Raw (2016) it can’t come soon enough. Body horror at its finest

I see Christian Bale, I think Patrick Bateman, no matter what the role. Watched Empire of the Sun last night and if anything this thought made it far more interesting.

Watched The Goonies with my 7 yr old, he loved it and I’m in recovery. The older I get the louder that film becomes I swear.
