Calvin spent 28.5 years in one of the worst federal prisons for a murder he didn’t commit. But instead of growing bitter, he taught himself the law. If he could endure that and still choose to fix the system, then we have no excuse. Knowing Calvin has been one of the greatest gifts of my life.
We’re proud to announce The Jailhouse Lawyer by Calvin Duncan and Sophie Cull, an “incredible” story “so heartwarming and hopeful that it will stay with you for a long time.” (John Grisham)

I find it helpful to ask the question—what's the next ribosome?

During the origin of life 4 bya, a folded matter phase of proteins & RNA emerged from an autocatalytic carbon cycle.

Then the ribosome acted as a "controller" to repeatedly create high-value proteins.

What are the AI controllers now?

The world has already eradicated smallpox. Polio is the next disease we could eradicate.

Here's how we got to where we are now, mostly thanks to the polio vaccine.

The preliminary sequence from the H5N1 human case in British Columbia has been posted and it is not good news. The virus potentially has a quasispecies at HA residue 226 (H3 numbering). This is bad news because we know that mutations at residue 226 can increase binding to human receptors. 1/

We love links because we love the open web
It is so incredibly nice to have a social platform that values links again - a breath of fresh air in the poisoned ecosystem of the creator economy

Back in 1996, 88% of all eggs in the UK were laid by hens kept in cages. In the latest data this is down to 28%.

A big win in improving animal welfare.

Visualization of the network: a night sky where each star is someone posting ✨

I made a thing!

I was playing around with the AT protocol and as a little experiment I made a website that visualises activity around Bluesky: nightsky.hctr.dev

It listens to all new posts and shows them as little stars across a night sky 🌃

Every star is someone, somewhere, posting something

This is a great community ethos. Did you know there’s also a “Newskies” feed with first posts from new users? I sometimes go in there and say hi to new folks coming on.
I think all of us should spend five minutes doing this each day:

👉 Search Bluesky for “first post”
👉 Filter by “latest”
👉 Like and welcome at least 10 new people

It makes a big difference and it could just make you a new friend!

🚨 Cool opportunity alert 🚨
At Frontier, we're researching the global, long-term capacity for alkalinity-based CDR. Sadly, there's no complete dataset on what rocks are under our feet! So we're crowdsourcing: $5K for ideas about whether/where there are big deposits of CDR-competent rock:

Frontier supports a portfolio of promising approaches that could potentially reach this collective scale. This challenge focuses on a subset of those approaches that rely on alkalinity as feedstock.

The Right built a powerful, partisan, & participatory media environment to support its messaging, which offers a compelling "deep story" for its participants. The Left relied upon rigid, self-preserving institutional media and its "story" is little more than a defense of imperfect institutions.

as people have pointed out in replies, block party does this! i built the feature bc it made no sense that i had to suffer through seeing abuse when people actively wanted to helped me.

a few additional thoughts on implementing delegated moderation: (cont’d)
I'd like to propose a Bluesky feature: delegated moderation.

You can delegate certain of your friends or associates to moderate replies & interactions from accounts you don't follow.

Delegates can approve replies and can also block / mute accounts as-needed on your behalf, without you seeing abuse
