“If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we’re up for grabs for the next charlatan political or religious who comes ambling along.”
In the last interview of his life (1996), astronomer Carl Sagan gave an eerily prescient warning of the dangers that come when you cannot ask skeptical scientific questions of those in authority. Watch and ask yourself: was he right?

This week we’ve likely seen criminal insider trading that will never be prosecuted because there will be blanket pardons for all involved on the morning of 1/20/29

Yet I repeat for the sake of our country 👇

Elected officials should have all their investments tied to either a broad index of American companies or Treasuries.
That’s it.
End single stock ownership for all elected officials.

Oh, also make their calls & schedules public after 24 hours so we know who is influencing votes 🇺🇸
New: Marjorie Taylor Greene urged the DOJ and FBI on Weds. to investigate anti-Tesla protests.

In doing so, she may have violated House ethics rules--because she owns stock in Tesla.

JFC. WE ARE STILL WORSE OFF. We still have *at least* 10% global tariffs. Businesses can’t make decisions, as they don’t know what tariffs will be 90 days from now
I usually say Trump is great at repackaging the status quo as victory but this is significantly worse than pre-Liberation Day status quo

In 2018, the VLBA telescope "spotted" Voyager 1 (or at least the faint radio signal from its transmitter). At that time , Voyager was already outside of our solar system and beyond the heliosphere. Resolution needed? 1/10,000 the width of a penny as seen from 4 km away. #NRAO 🔭#astronomy 🧪

The Threat to the Astrophysics Data System
Many times on this blog I have mentioned many times is the SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System which (for the uninitiated) is a Digital Library portal for researchers in astronomy and physics, operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) under a NASA grant. The ADS maintains three bibliographic databases containing more than 14.0 million records covering publications in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Physics, and (of course) the arXiv e-prints.

NEWS: Remaining USAID staffers are now receiving notices en masse that they're being placed on administrative leave.

Notice comes from Pete Marocco, who, via Marco Rubio (confirmed 99-0 by the Senate), has been authorized to oversee the agency.

Informing/reminding readers that consumers pay tariffs on the 11th paragraph is way better than not at all 👏

I’m afraid to ask how many people realize who actually pays tariffs, because it definitely isn’t foreign nations or companies. It’s the American consumer and/or business.

The NYT and everyone reporting on tariffs and the economy can and must do better to explain.
