Doing a PhD can feel like wandering through a forest with no map. You’re constantly questioning whether you’re smart enough, working hard enough or heading in the right direction. If you’re feeling this way, you’re not alone. More importantly, you’re not broken. patthomson.net/2025/10/25/b...

Searching for 'what works' is understandable, but there are no silver bullets out there and very little in education is reducible to treatments and procedures as it is in health. Education is an open, complex system, and it's purpose and nature is contested./1
Its time for education to have its own version of NICE.

The National Institute for Educational Excellence (NIEE).

Our current system suffers from inconsistency, weak evidence bases, and a lack of professional infrastructure. Here's why this matters /🧵

I'm not one to normally do this but really pleased to see our article published today in the CCT journal. The product of our beliefs and experience in teacher professional development and we hope of value and interest to readers.

Primary educators 👋🏻

I am interviewing teachers for a research project aimed at understanding how teachers learn from each other in the workplace. But my sample is currently very secondary heavy

Could you (please!) spare me an hour of your time this week or next? It will be interesting, I promise!

The interim report of the curriculum review is out. Some recognition of need to better balance breadth and depth (not specific to mathematics tho - see screenshot from p. 21). Absolutely no sign of budging on the MTC in Y4 disappointingly.

Last one from the last few months. Following one of Ameet Hindocha's analysis in his wonderful 'twelve twelves' book. I'm copying his example here and love how the positive/negative colourings draw the eye to different features.

Two different colours variations on Samira mian's pattern from April 24. Both now hanging in the office.

This one took forever! Green and gold 2-layer pattern: 8&12 pointed stars inside a larger 8-pointed star and cross tiling. Taken from Ameet Hindocha's 'twelve twelves'.

Instead of seeing the brain as a computer into which information can flow and be stored...

...what if we saw the brain as a mediating organ between perception and action? (Perception depends on knowledge).

How would teaching change?
