Maybe the economics of AI make sense because the goal of the AI vendor is to eventually cut everyone off, assemble all the prompts they’ve collected over the years, replicate their former customers’ software, then drive them out of business by undercutting their costs

Above the waves, the turbines do what they were built to do: generate renewable electricity. Below the surface, they are also “producing” life.

Fish, oysters, and other marine species are beginning to return, turning energy infrastructure into living reef-like environments. What started as a […]

I'm VERY anti "Remote Learning" on snow days. Snow days are magical and young people should play video games and have snowball fights.

Or go sledding.

And pester their parents who are doing remote office work to make hot chocolate.

Hmph.

The past year has made it clear that since I was a kid I've been fed a misguided ideal of "rugged individualism above all else" that akin to brainwashing all my life. The only "honorable" way to do anything was to do it all on your own. Anything less was you showing weakness by needing help from […]

Quiet is an alternative to team chat apps like Slack, Discord, and Element that does not require trusting a central server or running one's own. In Quiet, all data syncs directly between a team's devices over Tor with no server required.

The AI bubble will pop soon enough but this piece is surprisingly hopeful about what will emerge from the rubble — LLMs to help us write code faster or translate dialog on the fly, all the things I consider to be AI assistants.

One unsung hero right now is HuggingFace who are working hard to […]

If you are a service operator, just a friendly reminder that data canaries are telling through inaction, not action.

Don't do: "Check this post in the future. I'll remove it if we're ever served a secret court order."

Those secret court orders can totally prevent you from making that change […]

They say AI isn’t profitable. That’s not true.
Twice just this past week, I’ve been contacted and paid to fix problems caused by developers who relied on AI to configure servers.

Given the creative circular accounting practices we see around AI companies, slopholder does sound like the correct term for anyone in the unfortunate position of having spent hard currency on these stocks.

- I need to be able to […]

One thing that's tough for people who just join the Fediverse, like most of the folks on #theforkiverse , is that there are self-appointed experts who reply to their public posts saying that "the Fediverse" doesn't like that kind of content.

This is untrue. They don't speak for all of us […]
