The Friends of Ruth & Emily, Inc. is a nonprofit volunteer organization and 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to getting Asian elephants Ruth & Emily out of BPZoo.
After a long cold spring, Emily is starting to get some warmer weather. Longer days means more time outside. But her recent radiographs haven't been seen by a veterinary radiologist yet, though we've asked for the report twice. The rads below are a bit blurry. Perhaps the zoo will try again.

Please read this heart-wrenching write-up on Ruth's life and death at BPZoo.
Remembering Ruth
Ruth’s life is a story of constant trauma and suffering in captivity. Abandoned by an abusive owner in a waste transfer station, Ruth was sent to Buttonwood Park Zoo on October 26, 1986. Sadly, Ruth’s life didn’t improve at Buttonwood Park Zoo. She endured a 30 day “training”

The first taste of freedom for Pupy!
BPZoo fanatics always said Ruth & Emily would not know what to do if they went to a sanctuary after living in captivity. 🙄🙄🙄
Watch as Scott walks Pupy down the fence line, giving her a chance to stretch her legs and get to know her surroundings. Along the way, she pauses to knock down a small tree before moving on to strip the bark from another. It’s a beautiful glimpse into what sanctuary life holds for her.

Sooo. On December 27, 2024, the Buttonwood Park Zoo killed Ruthie, after torturing and abusing her for five horrible years. As even the former zoo director said, you can't get an elephant to stand still by positive reinforcement.
At her death, she weighed only 5400 lbs.

Now that the weather has turned colder, keeping Ruth standing at the door is a double whammy. Not only does it cripple her, but she's constantly in the shade. It's about 10°F colder, and feels even colder because she can't move to keep warm.
It's not as if there isn't a solution 🙄

This is what Ruth & Emily missed their entire lives. It's how zoos warp elephants--they are deprived of everyhing elephant.
Miale is small in size but big in attitude! Her mum, Mudanda, is behind her every step of the way & will support Miale throughout her life. Now, we proudly watch on as Mudanda raises the next generation of elephants born through our Orphans’ Project: www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news/updates...

What can we say about Ruth?
When we started, all we heard was "Emily and the other one." No one bothered to learn her name.

That's why we're the Friends of RUTH & Emily, because after all the years of being abused by the zoo (they damaged her trunk on arrival), ignored, attacked by Emily 2/2

And you may say, but wait. So Emily swayed in 2019. Does she sway now?

Does she ever! This reel almost got us kicked off FB! Meta pulled for violating community standards regarding buttocks!

And of course we have a YouTube channel:

Most of our vids are >60 sec, but here's one of Emily swaying. That's called "stereotypical" behavior. The zoo cons people by saying it's "anticipatory" behavior.
Really?
What's she anticipating?

We're on Facebook at

We're currently fighting to keep the zoo from killing Ruth. It's truly sickening how they've treated her for the past five years. Ruth is on the left. On the right is a starving elephant left behind during the pandemic in Thailand.

Can't seem to get a banner photo to upload. But other than that, we're off to a great start!
This is what it will look like, eventually. Ruth's trunk and twisted left front foot, caused by years of forced confinement in a filthy, tiny barn stall at bpzoo.
