We are losing the last of the generation who understand just how evil actual fascism is, how hard it is to rid the world of authoritarian governments once they’re established, and how hard it is to build a successful alternative. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/what-we-lo...
What We Lost When We Lost the Greatest Generation
It's no coincidence that democracy is backsliding in the US exactly eighty years after the end of World War II.

When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.

They’re planning on building a detention center for migrants in the middle of the fetid swamps of Florida.

If you think this is something new, the first internment camp they sent me and my family to in 1942 was a barbed wire prison called Rohwer. It was located in the swamps of Arkansas.

The House Ways & Means Committee advanced a tax bill that includes a dangerous provision granting the executive branch the power to effectively shut down any non-profit by accusing them of “supporting terrorism” and using that to suspend their tax-exempt status without any real due process.
Republicans Sneak Nonprofit Killer Bill Into the Tail End of Trump’s 389-Page Tax Plan
It would give the Trump administration the power to strip the tax-exempt status of any nonprofit it deems a “terrorist-supporting organization.”

In an executive order, Trump targeted the Smithsonian and the National Museum of African American History & Culture suggesting that it is “divisive” and pedaling “improper ideology.”

So, I took a trip back to the museum, and what I saw was a place trying to tell the unvarnished truth about America.

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.

Tonight, between Booker and the Florida results, is a night to remember that the unraveling of American democracy is not inevitable. Trumpism’s vision for the future is not inevitable. We have a voice—and a vote too.

Really liked this @aaronrosspowell.com piece as an antidote to the idea, valorized by a lot of the internet left in the 2010s, that being an asshole is good praxis.

That idea failed miserably. It's time to rediscover being decent. www.aaronrosspowell.com/p/the-necess...

It feels like no one should have to say this, and yet we are in a situation where it needs to be said, very loudly and clearly, before it’s too late to do anything about it: The United States is not a startup. If you run it like one, it will break.

Sometimes self-government just means elections. And sometimes it means recognizing the deeper dignity and meaning of what it means to be a people. That means speaking up, standing out, and protesting. We can only be free together.

A lot of people think of history as boring. But if done well, it's not. It's challenging, and really unsettling. That's why fascists hate it, and want to replace the actual practice of history with their nostalgic, ethnonationalist narrative of national greatness.

NEW FROM THE AMERICAN IMMIGRATION COUNCIL:

A mass deportation op would cost the US government an estimated $315 billion.

"Starting" at 1 million/year? That's $88B annually.

It'd cut GDP by 4.2-6.8%. That's the Great Recession on the LOW end.

The mass deportation of millions of undocumented individuals would be tremendously expensive and would have a catastrophic impact on our economy—one that would be expansive and impact every American. ...
