All this to say--today I bought myself seven yards of dark green taffeta.

It was one of the things that my mother ensured I lost when I was disowned after graduating high school. I have missed it terribly for twenty years. In my dreams, frequently I am still wearing it.

I loved everything about that skirt. The swooshiness! I sounded like a sailing ship, taffeta grabs the air hard. It was wonderful for dancing in, and willing to be kilted up for tree-climbing. It spun beautifully. It washed easily. It put up with lolling in the grass without complaint.
