Not enough space for all the nuance and detail, but essentially: yes, this.

If Mackenzie Scott set up trusts to staff newsrooms that don't need to be housed in large cities but can work remote, with all the necessary staffing, across the country, it would have a measurable effect on democracy.
That's a great idea. But (journalist here) it would be even better to fund a new (or small existing) news outlet that has the entire staffing of a larger paper - editors, copy editors, headline writers, fact checkers. Because papers need those to be legit, and journalists need that sort of backup.
