Although many squid species are bioluminescent, only a few octopus species are bioluminescent.

The glowing sucker octopus (Stauroteuthis syrtensis) is one of those few species, and is the only known bioluminescent cirrate octopus.

The Seven-armed octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) is a large octopus species, that as its name suggests, has eight arms!

The reason it gets its name is that males have their hectocotylus (a specialized arm used for mating) curled up in a pouch, making it look like they only have seven arms

The egg masses of the southern shortfin squid (Illex coindetii) resemble a metre wide cat's eye marbles.

That's especially impressive when you remember that the largest female squid of this species had a mantle length of 37 cm.

Giant squid (Architeuthis dux) are the longest and the second largest squid species, with a mantle length of around 2 m.

Although live giant squid weren't seen until the early 2000s, we've seen them alive plenty of times since.

Discoteuthis discus is a squid species that has been observed at most twice in its natural habitat.

Both times we've seen, they have been doing weird poses. But because we have so few observations of this species, we have no idea if this is normal for them or not.

Red-spot Night Octopus (Callistoctopus dierythraeus)? I wonder why it's called that...

Normally it has a orange colour with white spots like other night octopuses. But it switches to white with red spots when disturbed.

Its body is almost completely transparent and colourless, except for its eyes, digestive tract and golden chromatophores.

Explorations of the Shadow Leviathan for Subnautica: Below Zero. It had a more vertebrate-inspired face for a time, before we settled for the invertebrate maw.

One was inspired by a species of anglerfish that (apparently) has a set of glowing organs INSIDE its mouth.

Vampire squids (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) don't really live up to their name. They aren't squids, and they don't hunt, let alone suck blood.

But they are vampire-like in their longevity! They are thought to be able to live up to 10 years, longer than almost any other cephalopod!

Lots of different squid species have hooks on their limbs, but you often don't get such a good view of them on a live squid. I definitely wouldn't want to be on the business end of that squid!
