Instead of paying for music you don't actually own while Spotify surveils you and funds AI warfare, you can buy downloads from e.g., Bandcamp, or if it's not on there, I've found Qobuz (https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/shop) works. At the very least, artists get better paid and you aren't as surveilled.

It's very frustrating to me that so many people seem to be willing to hand over curation to an algorithm.

You don't need it! You can get recommendations from other people, use a web search, follow things in chronological order, use lists to filter your chronological follow list down by topic […]
