Post-2000 growth in Real GDP has been lower than pre-2000 growth. Here is what it looks like, mean was 3.7 prior to the great moderation, fell to 3.4 leading up to y2k, has been 2.2 in the 21st century so far.

When I first started using R, my variable names looked like this: behav_RT_data_raw. Now, they’re as short as dd. This evolution isn’t just about typing less—it reflects my growth as a programmer. What’s your go-to variable naming strategy? #rstats

As an economist, but also chair of a large department, and chair of a top administrative committee, I feel like I need to explain to various stakeholders why command-an-control policies fail to work in certain commons situations, and what policy over-reach entails

Prepping for Getting Started with #R day in #Econometrics. A new challenge with this generation of students is that they really don't understand file directories and where things are stored because they've always had the cloud.

Excellent report on both the establishment and household surveys. 256K payrolls well above expectations of 164K. The unemployment rate fell 0.15% for good reasons (the rise in employment outpacing the rise in labor supply). 2M revisions were negative but only -8K.

Looking forward to the new term about to start at Coe! Teaching Principles of Macro, Econometrics, International Finance, along with a special section of History of Thought by arrangement. Planning the schedule and assignments is still exciting, even in my 25th year.

Yesterday I was in a meeting during which the group was noticing the inefficiency posed by some of us not using the same brand of phone and I immediately thought - the economics of natural monopolies - and now I feel like a should send them a memo about it.

Chart time! Storms and strikes have skewed the past two months of data, but the bigger picture here is one of a gradually cooling labor market. (Note that this chart doesn't factor in the preliminary benchmark revisions, which won't be incorporated into the official data until early next year.)
