With completion of “The CIA Book Club” I had to prove my Eastern Bloc trip was not imagined.

I remember being fascinated with Solidarity, but certainly not understanding it in any depth. A younger me would be finding anything I could get my hands on to read.

So, suggestions welcome …

Thank goodness for this story of the 1980s Polish Solidarity, an uplifting palate cleanser reading it directly after finishing “1984”.

And it adds perspective to the trip I took with friends to the eastern bloc, including Poland, just after the wall came down (and to my parents in letting me go!)

Why / not?

In-person voting is still open today until 4:30pm & tomorrow, Saturday 1 November, 8:30-5pm.

You never know what’s going to come up, so why not just go get it out of the way right now?

I pointed them out to the kid sitting next to us before realizing she was heading home, so had seen them before, and she seemed amused by my fascination.

Along with benches, downtown could really use someone selling ears of corn from a large (and I do mean large) pot.

Imagine if NYT highlighted the actual threat: the (attempted) ban itself.

and just to show off, on the next block … a fountain with, you guessed it, built in seating.
July 12, 2025 at 8:44 PM
Brčko, Bosnia.

Here are the promised raised planters and seating plus bonus benches. (Note: these are of different planters in the same row. In total, there are 12 of these benches along raised planters.)

Can you even imagine those benches right in front of the restaurant. Free to all and sundry?!
July 12, 2025 at 8:37 PM
From the cafe I’m sitting at right now I can easily see 12 benches (12!) Compare this little section to the 14 *seats* (counting from memory) of downtown CVille. There are also elevated planters for seating *plus* attached benches. Pics later.

This headline highlights what’s wrong with politics and the media today.

Sure it’s a “tax-cut bill”, and it’s all just a game.

Meanwhile, this very morning in Sarajevo: “Dopušteno Pušiti” (smoking allowed)
July 1, 2025 at 6:38 PM
There is currently a large fire up on the hill, we think near the “white fortress”, above Sarajevo.

Sarajevan book store’s books on women, in English, better than most I’ve seen in America.
