My favorite grade to teach is 6th grade for a number of reasons, but today’s reason is because they’re confidently wrong sometimes.

Ex: In MLA citations, we reference the Author, Title, and quote location, such as a page number or a paragraph number (on a shorter text).

Funny email thread with one of sixth grade students.
S: Miss, you gave me a zero on the project, I turned it in on Nov 13.
Me: I’m sorry, I don’t have it. Can you check your binder? It might be in the Pocket of Doom.
S: I turned it in.
Me: check your binder.
S: Hey! I found it! Guess where!

Just made some homemade bread.

Didn’t join the sourdough craze of the pandemic, but I absolutely understand now.

It happened.

One of my students is the child of one of my high school classmates.

Kinda fun.

My favorite thing about my current sixth graders is that they’re willing to do hard work. Today I got them to locate six quotes from our class novel. No complaints. A lot of “what if I find more than six?” queries.

Love this.

I love when students misspell words. I know they mean, but it’s just fun.

Apparently, dragons lived in the medical times, not medieval. Also Pegasus is not just a normal hore you can ride around all day.

New school year just started. My new sixth graders are incredible!

It’s going to be an amazing year.

Of course I’ve been selected for Jury Duty with the United States District Court. What makes it even better is that it’s during the first week of the brand new school year. Lucky me.

Oh, I can’t postpone or excuse it.

My cat’s mortality keeps me up at night. How can loving a small furball be so rewarding and bring me so much happiness, yet so devastating at the same time??

Last night, I watched fireflies dancing above corn fields outside an Airbnb in Ohio. This was the first time I have ever seen fireflies!

Magical.

Attacking Iran was an unneeded escalation.

We’ve already had a war with pretense of “Weapons of Mass Destruction” this century. We know that was a lie.

This is chilling to watch and utterly unacceptable in the United States of America.

As a former Senator, I’m calling on all current members to speak out on behalf of Sen. Padilla and defend him and the Senate against these outrageous attacks.
Senator Padilla’s office sends me this video of his take-down and detention at Sec. Noem’s press conference in L.A.

I don’t post a lot, I never know the right thing to say. I’ve rewritten this post eight times.

I’m afraid. I don’t know what’s to come. And, I am so angry.

Melt Ice. Fuck Fascism.

Today was the last day of our school year. I have had the privilege of working with 133 6th graders, 42 7th graders, 16 8th graders, and two student teachers. This group of learners give me hope for the future- they’re compassionate and supportive of the community. This was my best year, so far!

I encouraged my sixth grade students to “dress for success” for their oral presentations. One kid presented in his soccer cleats because he feels powerful on the pitch.

His presentation was incredible!

My 8th grade leadership club boys sneaked in one of students from last year into our club meeting today, and when I did roll call, I was flabbergasted he was in my classroom. (The young man moved 100 miles away last summer). It was incredible to see him!! I really missed the kid.

Moment of Joy: I’ve been posting a daily poem for my students this month. I normally do an in depth unit, but this year I shifted focus to graphic novels. Yesterday, I caught some of my students writing their own poems in the margins of their notes. We’ll write poems after state testing.
