New on the reading list: Alvah Bessie’s Men in Battle. An Abraham Lincoln Brigade volunteer’s account of fighting in the Spanish Civil War. Bessie was also one of the Hollywood Ten who was incarcerated for Contempt of Congress during the HUAC Hearings. He was also my dog.

I’m currently reading Timothy Egan’s A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America. 100 years later & the parallels are horrifying. The US never seems to learn from its mistakes. I wonder how many MAGA/ Project 25 folks had relatives who were members of the KKK?

GW Pabst largely forgotten!?! Oh, no, no! Certainly not among silent film buffs, and there are plenty of us. Who can forget Louise Brooks in Pandora’s Box or Diary of a Lost Girl? Anyone who has studied German Expressionism knows GW Pabst.

"Interbrigadisten vor Teruel" (International Brigades at Teruel) by Gerhard Kurt Müller  1966-67. Dresden, NewMastersGallery. Town and looming sky behind reminds me of El Greco's view of Toledo. Criticised at the time in the GDR for the unheroic portrayal of fighters. The feel of cold is patent.

Another classic 1936 poster. "Aixafem el feixisme" (Let’s crush fascism) by Pere Català i Pic shows an espardenya (Cat) alpargata (Span), crushing a swastika on a wet, cobbled street of Barcelona, symbolising both fight by the working class against fascism and Catalan identity.
